iLBC codec and mute issues
I tried using the iLBC codec, and whlie I like it, I ran into a
strange issue. I did a few searches on Google and haven't found anyone
with the same issue as this.
Anyhow, I was using a Plantronics analog headset and box plugged into
a Digium TDM card, dialed out over my VoIP provider's IAX channel to
the PSTN.
I was in a confe...

rails hyperthreading on Quad core
Hi, my video sharing website (politube.org) that I developed with rails,
runs on lighttpd/fcgi (I know it is obsolete by now) and is severely
under load and regularly blocks because the lighttpd process chews up
50% of RAM (1GB).
So now I want to move the system to a new server with 8GB, 64bit ,
Quad core processor (intel i7 920) but I am not sure if hyperthreading
will really do anything better.

Lossless/lossy hybrid?
Monkey's Audio lossless compressor (currently win32 only, free but not
open-source except decoder) author is thinking to implement a kind of
audiophile-quality lossy compression which would filter "noise bits" that
are hard to encode lossless but which are (or should be) inaudible and thus
improve lossless compression (avg. 300-450kbps). I think that implementing
something like this

File uploaded to webDAV server on GlusterFS AFR - ends up without xattr!
Hello list.
I'm testing GlusterFS AFR mode as a solution for implementing a highly
available webDAV file storage for our production environment.
Whlie doing performance tests I've notticed a strange behavior: the
files which are uploaded via a webDAV server, end up without extended
attributes, which removes the ability to self-heal.
The set up is a simple testing environment with 2 servers and one AFR
client which runs Nginx web server whi...

collapsing a data frame
Trying to find a quick/slick/easily interpretable way to
collapse a data set.
Suppose I have a data set that looks like this:
h <- structure(list(INDEX = structure(1:6, .Label = c("1", "2", "3",
"4", "5", "6"), class = "factor"), TICKS = c(0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 3
), BROOD = structure(c(1L, 1L, 2L, 3L, 3L, 3L), .Label =

Rgui, Startup, HOME, R_USER, ...
Hi,
Main objective: Let Rgui find my ~/.Rprofile and ~/.Renviron files,
where ~ is equal to getwd("~").
I have few comments/questions:
(A) On my WinXP Pro installation, the system environment variable
'HOME' is not availble to R, e.g. Sys.getenv("HOME") is empty. I
believe this is default case (correct me if I'm wrong). However, if I
set the "Start
