rsync as a backup solution
...the backup server. However, this is
probably a bad idea in the event my data is deleted from the "/home"
directory (just as an example) before the cron runs. When the cron runs and
this isn't noticed before hand, the "/home" directory on the backup server
will probably be whiped out as well, correct? So, do all you that use rsync
as a backup method not use the "--delete" option, or do you keep maybe a
separate weekly backup safe somewhere else. Of course, we do have our data
center making tape backups of the backup server as well, but let's assume we
didn...

FW: graphich bootscreen howto ???
Hello sylvian
Thanks.
I use kernel 2.4.3 so far, and the Linux Progress Patch seems to start at
2.4.13....
What I don't understand is, why the kernel whipes out the VGA-display, as
both Syslinux and
the kernel is setup for serial-console.

Disk space usage with mdbox
Shot in the dark here...haven't tried it myself so no promises. There's
probably a much better way to do this but sometimes a little "brute
force" helps.
Theoretical steps:
1. Stop all mail processes - both SMTP and IMAP.
2. Use "doveadm sync" to backup the user mailbox, e.g.,
doveadm backup -u user mdbox:/tmp/usermail
3. Verify /tmp/usermail looks reasonable

Disk space usage with mdbox
Hello,
I am using dovecot with mdbox+sis and I notice an ever increasing disk
space usage since I converted mailboxes from Maildir to mdboxes. I have
checked with a user and while it actually uses only 65K, his mdbox files
on disk are more than 6G. The backup of his mailbox is just 64K. Any
suggestions ?
Below are some relevant commands:
[root at mail ~]# doveadm quota get -u test

Disk space usage with mdbox
Did you "purged" the deleted mails for this user?
On mdbox you must run "doveadm purge -u $USER" to whipe out any as deleted marked mails etc.
Details: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm/Purge
I use a nightly cronjob wor this.

Urban

Fedora Core 1
Is anyone running Asterisk under Fedora Core 1 (http://fedora.redhat.com/)?
If so, did everything with Asterisk work properly? I'm looking to migrate
from Red Hat 8.0 to Fedora this week.
Thanks.

Disk space usage with mdbox
Daniel thank you for the advice, I have done this exact procedure to
clean up some space and I reduced the used space by more than 60% (huge
gain!). Yet it is still a mystery why this happened first place and more
important if it will occur again, time will tell. I have kept one
mailbox out of this procedure (the "live" size is 8,8G, the backup size
is less than 1GB) to do some

Disk space usage with mdbox
Why things happen is one of the great mysteries and joys of being a
sysadmin...
As for cleaning up SIS, I believe the "doveadm purge" command takes care
of it. I have a daily cronjob which includes:
#!/bin/sh
# Permanently expunge old Trash
doveadm expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 2w
# Optimize mdbox storage
doveadm purge -A
# Update fts indexes
doveadm fts rescan -A

kernel: locore.s doesn't assemble (fillkpt, $PAGE_SHIFT, $PTESHIFT)
since august 8th, 2003 the kernel on my i386 pentiumIII won't compile.
the problem arises in locore.s with the definition of the constants
$PAGE_SHIFT and $PTESHIFT used in `shr' and `shl' instructions within
the macros `fillkpt' and `fillkptphys'.
i've tried to cvsup(1) RELENG_4 and RELENG_4_8 every day for over a
week now, but kernel builds (as part of a buildworld)

Samba/Winbind slow with Active Directory
Hi all,
I'm looking for answers regarding a problem I'm having with Samba. Since
a year our Samba fileserver is part of out worldwide corporate Active
Directory. Before that Samba was part of our local NT4 domain. Since the
change to Active Directory the Samba server became slower and sometimes
does not respond at all to share requests.
I need to find a solution to reduce the time
