blocking outgoing ports with iptables
Hi, I'm using the generic system-config-securitylevel-tui program on a remote server to configure my firewall. So far it's been fairly decent, allowing me to open up ports and whatnot. But I want to start blocking a couple of outgoing ports on my machine. I want to lock it down so the only traffic going in our out of my machine is stuff that I specify. Is there a way to do this with the system-config-securitylevel program? If not, what do you recommend I use to configure...

Samba 3.0 and LDAP
I was looking through my o'reilly book and according to it all of the ldap inputs that would be in smb.conf are not supposed to be there in samba 3.0. How do you specify which ldap server to use and whatnot?

'fitdistr' and two views of the same data?
Hello, I have detailed (with pictures and whatnot) my question on my weblog at http://www.cs-ed.org/blogs/mjadud/archives/2005/05/a_question_abou.html The short version of the question is this: When I ask 'fitdistr' to try and fit my distribution as a "weibull" distribution, it comes up with some rather wacky parameters. If...

Stange question...
...that she tried to transfer a call by pressing "#", and she heard a buzz noise in the phone and the phone then SHOCKED her in her ear. She wasn't able to do anything with the phone for a few seconds as the buttons didn't respond, then she could go back to picking up calls and whatnot. This is a Cisco 7960, SIP 7.4 on power over ethernet. I don't see how it would be possible for her to get physically shocked by the phone. Has anyone ever heard of this happening on any type of voip hardware? Mark

PSTN/phone/FXO/FXS cabling issue
...t. Now, i want to connect the TDM400P to the PSTN connector in the wall, and also to a regular analog phone. Both the PSTN conn and the phone use smaller connectors, typical for analog phones. I searched the "official" docs and the Wiki, there's good information about T1 cabling and whatnot, but not much about analog lines. I could make my own cables, but i don't know how to connect the larger Ethernet-style connector to the smaller analog-style one (which pins go to which?). Any help is appreciated. Thanks, -- Florin Andrei http://florin.myip.org/

Multiple network cards - routing issue?
...efault route is 204.83.15.254 which is the correct gateway number for that Internet connection. However, a ping or traceroute command (ping google.com or whatever) gives me no output. I've missed a step somewhere. I hooked my laptop up to that Internet connection to insure that the modem and whatnot is working and it is, so there's obviously something wrong with my configuration. Can any of you folks tell me what I've missed? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

[LLVMdev] x86 unwind support[MESSAGE NOT SCANNED]
> Yes. Wasn't that obvious? Sorry, I don't understand what point you're > trying to make. I noticed that some people (not you) seem to think that the dwarf unwinder knows special things about signals, pthread_cleanup_pop and whatnot. I was just trying to say that it does not: all this stuff is covered by the standard exception handling concepts. Ciao, Duncan

centos 8-Streams kernel?
...at is happening with centos 8-Streams kernel? It has been behind RHEL for months now, RHEL8.7 has 4.18.0-425.3.1.el8 built in December and Streams has 4.18.0-408.el8 built all the way back in end October. Is there some policy somewhere that I missed that says that 9 will be now getting the focus or whatnot? thanks,

...P25148.gollum:2,) imap(grin): Maildir /home/grin/Maildir sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox (95 > 94, file = 1127311363.H977932P25148.gollum:2,) This error reappears frequently. Doesn't go away by restarting dovecot, but does go away when I delete all index and cache and whatnot (and restart dovecot). Appears in 10 minutes again... Could be sylpheed-claws-whatever-alpha imap problem, but whatever the client does dovecot shouldn't be fall apart I believe. Peter

SSD for boot drive and OS
I just ordered a new machine that's destined to become a Centos 6 application server for a publishing company, and decided to get one with a 40GB SSD as well as a standard hard drive. I'm thinking that I can put most of the operating system on that drive and have the home directories and whatnot on the regular hard drive. Are there any pitfalls lying in wait for an unwary person like me when setting this thing up? Further, I suspect that if that thing rattles along like I think it should I'll probably want to add a SSD to my own desktop machine here. Since this computer is already s...

[LLVMdev] LLVM-based JVM JIT for libgcj
...m 16 minutes... I timed it this time; my earlier guess was off a bit). Unfortunately it turns out I do need the debugging capabilities. Darn. Chris> I'd suggest sticking with llvm-config and not using shared Chris> libraries. I didn't dig into the Makefiles... are the libraries and whatnot built -fPIC? I ask because I want to dynamically load this code into libgcj. JVMs pretty much have to be shared libraries (or have a separate version which is a shared library), at least if you want to support the invocation API. Call for Testers: Dreamweaver on Wine
...Dreamweaver 8 starts and seems to run reasonably well under Wine. But I'm no Dreamweaver user, and I don't have time to do much QA on it myself, so I'm sure I'm missing a lot of problems. Could somebody test it and/or comb through the appdb comments, usenet posts, blog entries, and whatnot about Dreamweaver, and start filing bugs? Can't fix 'em if we don't know about 'em! Thanks, Dan

AD dropping connection from storage cluster
...very weird problem with our samba AD server and our Isilon storage. This seems to affect only the storage, as our Windows workstations are fine. Suddenly the storage lost connectivity to the AD and so it's unable to provide access to the SMB shares. I've tried rejoining without success and whatnot. Today I even created second AD dc for the sake of tests (using Fedora just for the newer samba + bind packages). After fiddling around it eventually started working and kept the connectivity for about 30-40 min. At that point suddenly it dropped it again. One thing I noticed is that changing any o...

Possibility of implementing a low-level naive lock purely with LLVM atomics?
Hi: In our frontend we are attempting to build a lock mechanism without using system apis like pthreads and whatnot for internal reasons. In order to achieve this we are now creating a int32 type GV, and then use atomic load/store and comparisons. The generated IR looks like the following: ``` @Flag = private global i32 0, align 4 %0 = load atomic i32, i32* @Flag acquire, align 4 %1 = icmp eq i32 %0, 1 ..........

subversion verification on commit
Anyone have an implementation that allows you to evaluate the configs before they are committed to subversion? Too often, I''ll find that I missed a comma or whatnot and all of a sudden, puppetmaster can''t properly parse the configs anymore. I''d like to catch that before a commit. -- DK

call center - operators not using phone keys
Hi, I'm considering setting up a small call centre, but I don't want operators to need to use their phone keypads. Supposedly, all required call functions (dialling, answering, transfer, on hold, hang up, etc), should be done via their scripts (be is a web interface, curses or whatnot) and not using either a regular phone, nor a gnome-phone type interface. Also, all this will be happen in a 100% free MS zone. I think this can be done, but my experience is limited. Would this be possible with asterisk ? (more than a confirmation that it is possible, I was looking for a "...

Two R editiosn in Unix cluster systems
...Here's my guess First, The RPM packages need unique names, of course. Second, leave the RPM packaging for R-newest exactly the same as it always was. R is in the path, the R script and references among all the bits will be fine, no need to fight. It will find what it needs in /usr/lib64/R or whatnot. For the legacy R, I'm considering 2 ideas. I could install R with the same prefix, /usr, but very careful so the R bits are installed into separate places. I just made a fresh build of R and on RedHat 6, it appears to me R installs these directories: bin libdir share. So what if the configu...

aasm callback order?
Hello! Sometime ago I ran across a webpage where someone had identified the full callback sequence for an object lifecycle including AASM with it''s :enter and :exit and whatnot callbacks. Unfortunately, I can''t find it and searches don''t seem to help. Does anyone have a reference to a page that shows the callback sequence with Acts As State Machine (the gem)? I think there was a Wiki page on github with this, but I can''t find it. Grrr. Thanks...

Are all RC3 implementations identical?
...files, or are all RC3 implementations the same, and it makes no difference with what program I encode the files, as long as the module uses the latest release candidate? I assume that for someone to update the support module, they go to the official web site, download libraries, code, and whatnot, and merge it with their program. Is there any way to screw it up, to where the module will make faulty files? Thanks. -- Philip. <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.or...
