Using Push IMAP to trigger POP3 download
Hello all,
I have an HTPC connected 24/7 to the Internet running Mythbuntu. I
also have a web/email host that runs Dovecot for email and provides
IMAP and POP3 access.
I understand that Dovecot supports Push IMAP and I could, for example,
use Thunderbird to connect to my email host to receive instant email
as it arrives. I would like to add a Dovecot IMAP server on my HTPC

I am having a weird issue with samba where once a week approximately at the
same time users will lose connectivity,
if i run

However running getent passwd only shows local-users, no remote users are

We have a small cluster of 4 webservers running iis 7 (windows 2008 64 bit)

Recently we have had issues where a webserver will randomly lose the network
share, the only way to fix this is to restart winbind or samba,
When we restart winbind this fixs the problem with the server in question
however each of the other web servers servers lose

DB Connection Issue on Remote Webhost
Hey guys,
I''ve got an issue running rails on a remote machine via shell.
Everything is running great the only problem is I can''t get rails to
connect to the DB on the webhost. Here is the situation:
1. I can connect to the DB via mysql command in the shell so I know
the DB is hosted on the localhost.
2. I can connect remotely to the DB with Cocoa MySql on OSX.

fastercsv, freezing into vendor/gems
I''m using fastercsv such that in my rake file I''m doing this.
require ''fastercsv''
It works fine on my Mac.
I need to freeze this gem into the app though so my rake tasks work on
the production machine.
-----------
I spent about two hours though this weekend trying to get this Gem
"frozen" into the vendor/gems folder. I tried all sorts,

Trouble is when i come to deploy the app on my webhost I ran into
trouble.
Rails 2.3 app.
I did, "sudo rake gem unpack prawn" to freeze it in.
I put the app on my webhost but it won''t start, some error saying it

TLS/SSL connection anymore. But before the update Thunerbird was able to

Your RoR 1.1 Adoption Prediction?
What is the likelyhood that major inexpensive webhosts like godaddy,
bluehost, etc. will upgrade to RoR 1.1? Is this going to be like PHP 5
where it has to percolate for a year or more before it becomes widly
available? Your thoughts?
Along the same lines... is it possible to adopt some of the new improved
Ajax / javascript capabilities without actually upgrading the ruby
installation?

DRY question (newbie)
Say i want to include the same chunck of text (a menu on a webpage for
example) on each page. Is there a method by which I can save the HTML in
a text file and call it up later? Is there a better way?
I know ruby has "puts" but i can''t use that b/c it does not work with my
webhost (dreamhost.com)
Any suggestions?

SMS Gateway .... for Rails app? (a bit OOT)
I''m simply looking for a SMS gateway... The ones like what Twitter uses...
The intended audience would be globally.
Some of you would have used them and I''d really appreciate if you could
share your experience.
I''ve Googled and the problem isn''t that there is none, the problem is
that there are simply too many. Almost like looking for a webhosting. So

Why CentOS as a webhosting platform
Hi,
CentOS seems to be doing really well in the hosting business these days, and
even for people who would normally have used Windows or OSX on the hosting
previously, are now looking at using CentOS. And I thought it would be nice to
have a section on the wiki about exactly why that is.
Not having any direct connection with the hosting business I was wondering if
people here could help me

Creating user home directories with domain login
Hello,
I've got Samba set up for domain logins and use
winbind as well. What I'm wondering is if it's
possible for the home directory to be automatically
created when the user logs in if it doesn't already
exist? If not, anyone have a relatively easy way to
do this, in addition to giving the proper owner and
group?
Thanks,

Updated Spam Assassin for CentOS 5...
I am wondering about updating the version of Spam Assassin on my CentOS 5 mail
server. The current version, 3.3.1-4.el5 (stock RHEL version), has been
'leaking' recently. I suspect I need some newer match rules to detect some of
the newer flavors of spam. I see that in rpmforge's extras repo is version
3.3.2-4.el5.rfx -- is this version worth installing? Are there even newer
versions

Repeated measures design for GAM? - corrected question...
Dear all,
I have a question on the use of GAM with repeated measures. My dataset is as follows:
- a number of study areas where bird abundance has been determined. Counts have been performed in 3 consecutive years and there were 2 counts per year (i.e. in total 6 counts).
- a number of environmental predictors that do not change over year Xi).
When using a GLM, a repeated measures design would

rsync over ftp
Hello,
I would like to use rsync client over ftp. I know how to use it with ssh but
it just can't work with ftp or ncftp. The purpose of usign it with ftp is
simple: most webhosting soft. like cpanel or plesk don't monitor ssh
bandwidth usage. You need to monitore it in order to suspend an over-quota
account.
I tried the following:
rsync -avze '/usr/bin/ftp -nv' /tmp/testdir

winbind issue with samba 3.3.9
Hi,
This morning I had an issue with winbind where it lost all its uid's, I
tried restarting samba and winbind but still no joy :-(
The only way to fix it was to change the following :
idmap config WEBHOSTING : schema_mode = rfc2307
idmap config WEBHOSTING : backend = ad
idmap config WEBHOSTING : range = 500 - 300000000

Printers Icon
I have installed Samba2.2.7a on an Ultra5 Solaris 8 Operating System. The
smb.conf file has been configured and all appears to work fine. However,
along with my shared resource, I am seeing the Printers icon. I only want
to use Samba to share resources, and not for printing. Is there a way to
make the Printers Icon invisible? I already tried the hide files, and
veto files parameters in

ChrootDirectory security
Hello,
I've tried many places, finally ending up here to ask my question: why
is it so vital that the directory used with the ChrootDirectory
directive is root-owned?
Like many people I'm trying to use this in a webhosting environment
where several users get sftp-only access to some directory, usually
something like /home/user/web/part-of-website.
I can be sure that there are no setuid
