Revisiting slow explorer.exe connections
...st when I did a directory listing after "mount"ing the
drive letter. But explorer.exe took 30-40 seconds to yield the same
information. Obviously is was something on the client end if the
command line worked fine.
A Google on the topic yielded hints that it had something to do with the
webclient service attempting to connect to port 80, as attempting WebDAV
is apparently a default setting from the box.
I originally thought that setting the iptables firewall to REJECT
connections at port 80 would solve this problem, and I did exactly
that. Maybe it did help (caching confused the issue), b...

webDAV (webclient) interferes with XP logons
Very long story short...
1. Samba server on machine running iptables or behind a firewall
2. Client XP domain logins taking 45 seconds or more.
3. The problem: webDAV (webclient) is running on the XP workstations
and this mysteriously triggers access to port 80 on the file server,
which in turn adds up to long delays.
If you are running an HTTP server and it isn't blocked then these
accesses are rejected and they cause little delay.
If you aren't runnin...

Samba and the WinXP WebClient
...horrible performance when opening files from out Samba server
with OpenOffice.org on some of our XP machines (not on all, I might
add). Also, the general file transfers (copy to/from server) were fast
and adequate.
Then I had stumbled upon the Samba HOWTO which mentioned turning off
this "WebClient" service on WinXP.
I'm just rather curious, why does this WebClient slows down the opening
of files with OO.org? Anyone care to elaborate?
Thanks in advance!

RE: XP Pro timeout; we have a winner - webclient service
Thanks to Jason Balicki for the correct fix to this problem.
The 'webclient' service in Windows XP, somehow interferes with access to the
Samba server. With the service stopped and disabled, the clients are
working again.

Printing vs. iptables
Recently, Windows 2000 SP4 clients have developed a problem when using a
network printer connected to a Samba print share.
Some applications are OK. But take, well, notepad, for example. Selecting
a local printer is normal, but there is a two minute delay (!) in selecting
a network printer. Once selected, all is well. All smb operations are
frozen until the selection happens. This is

Problems w/long file access times (samba2.2.5 & WinXP pro) (fwd)
Hello all,
we're currently having problems with Windows XP machines that have
*very* long file access times for files that are located on our
linux-based samba server (samba 2.2.5 / linux 2.4.18). This happens with
all kinds of files, with all kinds of programs, including Office97, text
editors, develoment environments, etc.
Sometimes - the incidents itself seems to be random and is not

People are complaining that there system is freezing when the try and browse
the shared folder. They just don't give it enough time to get connected.
Anyone got an answer

NTLMSSP_NEGOTIATE_IDENTIFY flag
...g NTLMSSP_NEGOTIATE_IDENTIFY is used for?
I looked in the samba sources and only found it in .idl but there as far as I
can tell there is no implementation of that. I searched for some information
on the web but did not really find something useful.
Before anyone asks: Microsoft's HTML5 RDP Webclient uses that flag and insists
that the server supports that, else it disconnects with a security error
saying that a required ntlm feature is missing.
Kind regards

XP Home client problems.
Hi,
Please ignore this mail if you have already received this mail before.
I have been trying for 2 frustrating weeks to get my XP Home machine
to talk to the Samba server on my SuSE 9.2 Linux box. Described below
is the crux of the problem.
When I do an smbclient on the Linux box I can see the Windows machine
listed. However, when I do a net view on the Windows XP Home machine I

Wierd interaction between Samba and HTTP?
...05 300 "-" "Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/5.1.2600"
This problem goes away when I run samba-3.0.24-1. So, somehow, some
change in Samba is causing a Windows mount request to somehow get
redirected to http ...
I did some googling, and found a suggestion that I turn off service
webclient on the Windows side. Doing this makes all mounts fail all the
time.
What was changed in more recent builds of Samba that affects this? What
do I need to do so that I can reliably mount Samba shares from Windows
(which are unrelated to HTTP)?
Thanks for any help,

[Q] Why does it take so long for XP to logon?
If I login to our Samba box (RedHat 7.1 + 2.4.20) under Windows 2K
via Start->Run->share name, I get logged in almost immediately. It
averages about 25 seconds under XP. This behavior has been true in
various versions of Samba since I believe XP was available and is
reproducible on every (several) Windows 2K/XP boxes I have tried.
This is a workgroup environment with Samba acting as

Problems usign samba with Windows XP Pro
Hello,
I have upgraded my computer from W2K to W XP Pro.
I use samba connections to reach an Aix server (4.3.3), on which samba
2.2.8a is installed.
Before upgrading my computer, everything worked perfectly, but since, the
first time I try to access a file or directory on a samba network
filesystem, I takes approximately 5 to 6 minutes to make connection. After
that, response time is fine.

Documentation updates...
...===========================================
Windows XP includes a WebDav client that attempts to open shares via HTTP.
The long wait time appears to be a symptom of this client waiting for a
response to open requests.
The delay can be eliminated by disabling this service. The service name is
"WebClient", and can be disabled through the Services management console
(accessible from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools by default).
This problem is also supposedley fixed in XP Service Pack 1, but this has
not been confirmed. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base
