what's the plans for the website :-)
...because I'm interested, and I take a moment to note what kinds of problems people can have when installing, so I'll have an edge when I try again soon :)
In a nutshell, what are the plans for the website?
Cheers,

icecast permissions
I'm told not to run Icecast as root but am unable to run as a normal user
because my log files are owned by root in /var/log/icecast.
even if I change their permissions to 777 it defaults back to 755 and i'm
out of luck.
Can someone tell me the best way to approach running icecast as a user?
Also, is there a way to automatically start icecast? When I put it in my
startup (webmin-based)

Segfault in ices
Did you create the playlist on the linux server or bring it over from a
Windows machine?
I had a similar problem when I was taking moving some playlists.
I ended up ditching the old playlists (after all kinds of
searching/replacing) and re-created them on the linux server. One good way
to do this is to use find. 'find /home/audiotron/music -print' did the
trick for me.

more fun with LAME - error in bitstream?
Hi folks! Having trouble with re-encoding to 160Kbps.
I have:
Linux-Mandrake 8.2
Icecast 1.3.12
IceS 0.2.2 source
Lame 3.92
Hardware is: Celeron 533 w/256MB RAM, 40GB Disk
All seems to work at first but after a few songs it craps
out and give me an ERROR WITH BITSTREAM (or something real
close...sorry).
ALL of my MP3s are encoded using the --r3mix flag (VBR)
with LAME 3.91 or 3.89.

error with libshout
I don't know what's happening there. Thought maybe it was a mp3 file (I've
had troubles with certain mp3s).
Check your messages log in icecast (you can change the message detail with
the console mode I believe).
You might be getting a bad password or something on the icecast side and by
looking at ices just seeing this error.
Could be a bad port# ?
Wish I could be of more help.

ices - unable to compile
Thanks...this seems to have gotten me over the compiling "hump".
I get this when I run the ices binary:
./ices: error while loading shared libraries: libshout.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
Are there some path settings that I need ?

ices - unable to compile
Thanks. That's got it.
Now I'm getting "bad password" errors. "hackme" is the default password in
icecast and i'm running ices with the -P hackme flag.
Sorry to be such a drain...

Good luck with that.
Actually I didn't mean log. I meant the icecast console itself. If it's in
the right console mode (2?) it will display everything that's happening and
any error messages. Seems like the log only shows uptime info by default.
Any ol' how, i think i've exhausted my in-depth technical prowess ;-)

ices - unable to compile
Hi,
I'm the newbiest of newbies but recently converted over to linux from
WinNT...woohoo!
All is going well EXCEPT for replacing my Shoutcast server.
I'm able to compile icecast but am unable to compile ices due to some
missing libraries?
Can someone send me to a BEGINNER "HOW TO" that would describe the steps for
compiling and installing ices on my Mandrake 8.2 server? I

I appreciate everyone's response. It's glad to see there are others out
there...
However, I still have seen a number of posts that have gone unanswered and
some frustrated users (keyword: users) such as myself.
Currently my issues are:
Unable to start icecast from init.d (error: "You can run, but you can't
hide" repeatedly output until it almost crashes my box)

bitstream problem: resyncing...
This one really has me stumped.
I'm running 866MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB Disk (7200RPM) on Linux-mandrake 8.2
icecast 1.3.12 & ices 0.2.3 & lame 3.91
all mp3s encoded with lame 3.91 or higher and --r3mix (VBR)
Sorry for the long email but I'm hoping to get someone out there that's seen
this before and give me some advice...
I'm continually getting errors like this when running

ices - unable to compile
thanks Geoff. I was going to spare everyone the details and continue my
search but I sincerely appreciate the help.
Here's the output from 'configure', 'make', and 'make install', as best I
could capture it.
I'm not editing any of the make files or using any flags.
This is the latest version if ices that is on icecast.org. It appears that
libshout came with the

I've had the same issue. Must not be many subscribers or they've moved on
to some other list.
I switched to the linux Shoutcast for my server (much more reliable) and am
looking for a replacement for ices that reliably re-encodes VBR. Let me
know if you find anything.
BTW...maybe if you posted your config files for ices and icecast i could
compare it with mine (or my old one for
