chinese characters
Hi,
I am using SME server 6.0 which has samba preconfigured on it. We
upgraded from MS Windows 2000 server.
I am using the server in China and so many of the users wish to create
files with Chinese characters in their names.
File names with Chinese characters seem to cause all sorts of problems.
They have trouble creating them, and files which are copied off backup

counting row repetitions without loop
Hi,
I have a data frame consisting of coordinates on a 10*10 grid, i.e.
> example
x y
1 4 5
2 6 7
3 6 6
4 7 5
5 5 7

7 4 5
8 6 7
9 7 6
10 5 6
What I would like to do is return an 10*10 matrix consisting of counts
at each position, so in the above example I would have a matrix where,
for example, cell [4,5] contains 2 and [6,7] contains 3. At the

disk mounting madness
I've got a server running CentOS 4.2; installed as 4.1, kept updated by
yum.
A few days ago it crashed.
I picked it up from the datacenter, and brought it back to the office,
where it took a long time to boot because it couldn't find anything.
When it finally booted and I logged in I discovered an interesting
problem.
Only the / partition had loaded. /etc/fstab had all the

Circumstances:
The system is a hardware duplicate of a system that installed and works
for many months. Running CentOS 4.x.
The system was previously in service with CentOS 3.x and I'm trying to
install CentOS 4.1 on it from downloaded CDs which have worked
previously (these are the same CDs used to install the system that's
working).

Calling Asterisk Autoattendant With SIP Phone
I'm trying to get into the world of Asterisk in order to use the voicemail and autoattendat features (and more stuff later) with a Redcom switch. But, I've only started and haven't gotten to that yet. At this point my solitary goal is to talk to the autoattendant via an SIP phone (SJPhone). I've spent countless hours trying to find the documentation I need to accomplish my goals

ftp daemon problem
New install of CentOS 4.1; our first try at the 4.x.
On previous 3.x installs we've used proftpd.
On this one we're using (trying to use is a better statement of what
we're going through) the default daemon, /usr/sbin/vsftpd.
But we don't get anywhere.

Shadow Copy Client blank, with error in logs
One computer will show the previous versions of files just fine, but
every other computer I've installed the Microsoft Shadow Copy Client on

normalised Voigt random numbers
Dear list,
I would like to generate random numbers from a Voigt distribution,
hopefully in a way as simple as getting random numbers from a normal
distribution with 'rnorm'. Is there any package to do this? Speed is an
issue in this application. Or, as the Voigt distribution is a
convolution of a Gaussian and a Lorentzian, can I simply combine random
numbers from rnorm and rcauchy in some

how to delete a parameter from list after running negative binomial error
Hello everyone,
Sorry if my question is not clear, my first language is not English, but
Portuguese.
I am building a model for my data, using non-binomial error. I am having a
bit of a problem when updating the model to remove parameters that I no do
no autocorrelate with other variables (I have used a autocorrelation
function for this).
So my first model looks like this:

clients logout and client creating users
Hi,
Two questions, only slightly related to SAMBA :
1) when I have logged into my Samba server (rh9) from
a W2K or XP
client, how can I log out again so that I can log in
as someone else. I
know logging out of W2K/XP will work, but I would like
to log out of the
SAMBA server w/o logging out of W2K/XP. My Mac OS X
client has an
'eject' button which I can use - something similar to

Website running slow and Timing Out, but at random...
I have a site running the current version of Centos 4.2, it has a
shopping cart running on it and runs slow and times out at random. The
cart is a simple php package using a MySQL database backend.
Can any one think of ways to improve the speed in MySQL and Apache, I've
had the cart checked by the software vendor, it's working like it
should, they are pointing to MySQL or Apache and

Automated YUM update kills DNS
We've got several CentOS 3.x systems running DNS that we keep updated
automatically via YUM.
Recently two of those systems (not all of them) when updating themselves
to the latest versions of BIND, automatically replaced /etc/named.conf
with a new one and saved the old one as /etc/named.conf.rpmsave.
Which of course broke DNS for those servers.
All servers got updated, but only two of

Asterisk as a voicemail for a central office switch
I've spent the past several weeks reading up and playing around with Asterisk while I've been waiting for an ISDN card I got on ebay to arrive so I can really get to business. I'd just like to run my project ideaa by some of you to hopefully get a little feedback. I aplogize if this ends up being a somewhat long message.

Looking for server recommendations
We're going to replace an older Solaris7/Netbackup/TapeRobot server with
a new Centos box using backup-to-disk-to-tape (probably using Arkeia).
The specs are up in the air, but generally:
- CentOS/RHEL friendly (3Ware SATA? SCSI?)
- 2U/3U/4U-ish form factor
- hotswap RAID5
- dual PS, hotswap a plus
- USB2.0 port(s) (*)

I have a server running CentOS 4.2 that works as a web/email with very
heavy load. It runs Directadmin web gui which is like Cpanel. It
runs on a cheapy mATX motherboard(ECS 741GX-M) with socket A 2800+ CPU
and 2Gbyte DDR. The OS and data are on a 300Gbyte PATA maxtor drive
and data backups are run weekly to another PATA drive. The server is
overwelmed and data backups take over 5 hours to
