flac worse than shorten ON SOME FILES
had to fix the subject... was getting under my skin! yeah, could you put up the FLAC version of the worst track that is less than 20 megs compressed? (I'll have to grab it with a 56k modem). by worst I mean the one where shorten beats flac by the most. also: 1. what version of shorten are you using? 2. what command-line options for flac and shorten did you use on this track? thanks, Josh

How do I read a text (.csv) file to match a matrix/cross tab? (Object confusion??)
I'm having a problem reading data to set control totals for a dataframe. I want to adjust a dataframe based on a 2-d table of values, which I get by using : > CurrentX1Sums <- as.matrix(xtabs(~tripid_nu+lineon, data=SurveyData)) > CurrentX2Sums <- apply(CurrentX1Sums, 1, sum) I've created a .csv file with new (target) sums that looks like this: tripid_nu Warner

LNP Problems
What is the deal with "CSR's"? TWTelecom is telling me that I can't port a number to their service without a Customer Service Record. Apparently this is easy with Verizon, and not so easy with some other companies. Basically I'm at a brick wall with a couple of ports because TWTelecom is telling me I HAVE to get a CSR and certain other providers (Time Warner Cable for

How to turn on SMB signing
Using Samba 3.0.9-Debian on Linspire 5.0.59. Server running is a Windows 2003 Server. I am trying to mount a share on the server but getting error message: cli_negprot: SMB signing is mandatory and we have disabled it. 8919: protocol negotiation failed SMB connection failed In smb.conf I have changed setting "server signing = no" to "server signing = required" but

anyone using SIP trunks from Time Warner Telecom?
I am currently using a T1 PRI from TWTelecom for DID and outgoing calls, but I recently discovered that they're offering call termination/origination over SIP trunks in my area now. If they could deliver these SIP trunks to me over a guaranteed-QoS circuit, this would be of great interest to me. We're already using a DS3 circuit from TW for our internet uplink, so I'd imagine it

BETA3 report
I just tried to boot the BETA3 disc1 iso on my Toshiba Satellite A64-S1762. I got a cryptic message: Too many holes in the physical address space, giving up <rest of copyright message here> PANIC (if I've gone into the BIOS at all), followed by a panic. Or I get a panic when probing the ohci device (either with or without a USB keyboard attached, the built-in keyboard is fried). Has

Stallion EC8/32-AT
Anybody successfully using the Stallion EC8/32-AT on -stable? I just tried using the one I got on ebay and found that it hands on port close and passes no characters at all. Do any of the stallion cards work? Warner

[LLVMdev] Fwd: Building VMKit
Hi Nicolas, Thanks for all your help, but if 64-bit systems are still a big problem, perhaps the VMKit AOT compiler is not the best solution to my problem. I'd like to be able to support the major (if not all all) platforms that the Avian JVM supports - x86 & x86_64 linux & windows, powerpc darwin and ARM. User Rights
Color me stupid! I have set up a small SAMBA network using a Caldera Systems eServer 2.3 implementation of Linux with a AMD K-6/2 and 128 meg RAM. It works great from one computer, and one user id, but I am unable to login as any other user. The one user is set up in such a way that it would create a serious security hole (member of group root). The server shows up in the network neighborhood,

subset point data set by distance ranges
Greetings I'm using R 2.8 with recent (last month) versions of the packages I need to use at present. I'm interested in examining hierarchical spatio-temporal patterns in a data set. The data consist of 94 points (X, Y, UTM coordinates) at which catch rates for a fish were recorded and there are also estimates of prey available for these fish at the same locations.

Execution from ip-up.local
Hi, I'm using Firestarter as my firewall. If I restart the network or my DSL line goes down, I have to manually restart Firestarter. I have sh /etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh stop and then sh /etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh start in my ip-up.local file. I confirmed ip-up.local us being executed by placing an entry in the logs, but it appears firestarter is not or at least not correctly.

[LLVMdev] Fwd: Building VMKit
Hi Minas, I tried recompiling Classpath with -fno-omit-frame-pointer, and now, instead of printing an error message, j3 just segfaults in "j3::JnjvmClassLoader::loadClassFromAsciiz(char const*, bool, bool) ()" I ran llcj under strace and found that it is not even opening the input or output files, but is otherwise running normally. Updating to the latest SVN version (revision 108831)

[LLVMdev] Fwd: Building VMKit
Hi Joshua, What plans did you have for GC? No GC at all or Avian JVM has its own GC (and is it precise or not?)? If you're not planning on using VMKit's GCs, then 64-bit system should not be a big problem: the only problem that we have now is compiling GNU Classpath, and most probably Avian JVM has its own version of the class libraries? Also, note that platform support will be strongly

[LLVMdev] Fwd: Building VMKit
Hi Joshua, If you can get a running 32bit system, I'd suggest you do so, as you'll get up to speed right away. I can't test VMKit on a 64bits machine, and I have been aware that there are some compilation/execution problems. Besides, the current GCs of VMKit do not work on 64bits (neither MMTk nor GCMmap2). [LLVMdev] Fwd: Building VMKit
Hi Nicolas, I plan on using the Avian GC (which is a precise, generational collector). Eventually, I'd like to fully integrate all of the runtime services Avian provides - even integrating the existing Avian JIT compiler, to allow for partially-AOT builds. Avian does indeed have it's own class library, but I would be very surprised if VMKit could compile with them - they are sufficiently

2 Questions
Hi, Just two quick questions: 1. Would it be possible or difficult to upgrade FreeBSD 4.8 -STABLE to 5.2 -STABLE when it comes out? 2. Which is the best for a production environment, -STABLE or -RELEASE Someone told me they think the latter is better because it doesn't require as much downtime for an upgrade. Thanks Joe

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed

production environment
So I''m getting ready to setup a production environment on my boxen (running Fedora Core 3), what are my options? I''ve seen a number of posts about FastCGI, SCGI, etc. and am completely lost as to what I should be setting up on my box (that I hopefully won''t have to touch for a while). I need to run Collaboa, Typo and probably 3 or 4 other apps on this, so
