Ubuntu html help pages missing
I don't see any way to install the html help pages for R version 2.7.x
or 2.6.2 on Ubuntu (Hardy) without rebuilding. I don't use html
myself, but there is a problem when someone else does:
?lm ## help works
help.start() ## fires up browser
?lm ## no longer works becuase it is looking for (missing) html help
pages to show in browser
I searched for r-doc packages but could not

cran ubuntu repository and ubuntu 12.10
Since upgrading to quantal, I find that synaptic and apt-get cannot read
the sources.list file if it includes the previously standard line
deb http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/ubuntu/ quantal
This line makes apt-get or synaptic give an error message identifying
this line as having a syntax error.
If "multiverse" is added at the end of the line, the line is parsed, but

compile under Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex)
I fired up a new machine last night and loaded Ubuntu 8.10 on it. I then had
to add in the usual compiler stuff which is not loaded by default: make, emacs,
fortran, c++, etc.
I'm having trouble compiling R 2.8 however. I get a message that it cannot
figure out how to link f77 and C. I've pulled in "gfortran". A google search
on "fortran ubuntu 8.10" shows

Install latest R version from apt on Lenny
well, I had the site and page and I had added the relevant backport but it didn't work and i keep installing R 2.7 . Don't know why; i probably missed something.

May be you should add in your mail the file :
/etc/apt/sources.list (I suppose there might be a typo, as IT addresses are long and booring, and AFAIK, correcting a typo one made is **very** difficult).

Request for jags package to be added to CRAN Debian/Ubuntu archives
May I request that Dirk's package for jags be added to the CRAN
archives for Debian and Ubuntu?
Installing the rjags package for R requires specific versions of jags
to be present on the system. The current version of rjags requires
jags version 2.2.0 or later but the version on the Ubuntu archives at
Canonical (i.e. not the CRAN archives) is 2.1.0-2
I can always install Dirk's package

New Debian packages using /usr/share/R as well as /usr/lib/R
R always had all its files below /usr/lib/R, which isn't perfectly in line
with the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS). We did get some bug reports on
this, and I tried to argue for a while that this was consistent upstream
behaviour etc pp I would expect the issue to come back again.
Brian Ripley had made some changes to R a few months ago which allow to split
doc/, include/ and share/ off

optimized linear algebra library on Lenny
Hi,
I'd like to install the optimized libraries on my Thinkpad with an Intel
Core Solo chip, which apparently supports the following instruction
sets: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3 instruction sets, XD-Bit.
In a recent r-help message, the following was said (by Dirk I think):

Yes, on Ubuntu, use 'apt-get install atlas3-base' for basic tuned Atlas, or

Installing and maintaining R on Ubuntu 9.04 -, best practice
I had an exchange of ideas on this with Dirk E. a couple of months ago.
He can correct this if I state it wrongly, but
1) we agreed that using apt/Synaptic structure was best, but sometimes
the packages are not available
2) also that using install.packages when there is a .deb can lead to
some "confusion" (the package database on the
local system does not know about an R package

R CMD INSTALL cannot find libf77blas
I feel like Marlon Brando in "On the Waterfront" where he's told "It's
not your night, kid", except for me it has been the last two months
trying to debug memory problems. Now I can't even install an old
version of this package on a netbook running the Ubuntu 10.10 netbook
remix because it can't find the libraries libf77blas and libatlas.
I have even gone to

I do not want to answer for the OP, but for myself, two things:
1) I maintain a personal library in my HOME folder - for a few
reasons - and one of the benefits is that I can install/update R
packages without needing to run R as

make check reg-tests-1b.R fails with Ubuntu R
Today I built R from source on a 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS box, and
saw that the "make check" tests/reg-tests-1b.R failed. From the
output at the end of my "tests/reg-tests-1b.Rout.fail" file, the
problem is appearing in the "identical(z, x %*% t(y))" test code
below.
I then tried the stock R provided by the Ubuntu r-base-core binary
package, and to my surprise, it

ubuntu problem with 'r-cran-robustbase' [FWD Agustin Lobo]
Agustin, posted on R-help.
I think the problem is one of the debian/ubuntu package
'r-cran-robustbase' and its setup or (missing?) dependencies.
I can confirm Agustin's problem, working on Ubuntu 8.04.2
(8.04 is a "LTS" = long time support version).
apt-get install r-cran-robustbase
works fine, but when trying to load the package,
there's a DLL - dependency on
