Strange issues with Excel & Samba
I have a client who used to have an NT server, we replaced it with Gentoo Linux and Samba v3.0.9 and they are now having what appears to be some sort of file-sharing issue with Excel. When a user opens an Excel file on the file server it opens properly, no errors or warnings of any kind. But when they try to save the file, Excel warns them that "the file may have changed by someone

Runaway apcsmart process
On several occasions I have seen the apcsmart process runaway using 100% CPU while filling my syslog partition by logging the following syslog entries at an incredible rate. I have seen up to 21,800 log entries PER SECOND of the following nature: --[snip]-- Jun 25 10:06:38 servername apcsmart[4012]: Communications with UPS lost: Communications with UPS lost - check cabling Jun 25 10:06:38

Transparent File Caching
...ion, but if anyone would know that answer, it would be this group. :) Are there any Open Source projects that offer network file caching for SMB/CIFS? Something like what Squid does for HTTP. If not, do you think it would be difficult to position Samba into such a role? We are going to use Cisco WAAS for branch locations, but I think the cache in the devices may not be enough for some locations. Food for thought if nothing else :)

Samba print fix utility?
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/print_utility/troubleshooting/guide/PrntUtil.html#wp39367 It's saved me numerous times. Other people have asked for a copy. But you need a valid contract to use it. Does anyone know of a similar open/free utility? Apparently the product this utility supports is end of life: http://w...

exporting clustering results to table
...s=TRUE); Is there a <em>generic</em> method to export cluster object? I know that pam is different (cluster object and some more data)- how can I extract & export the clustering into a table with two columns, ID = dissimilarity matrix row, and cluster = number of the cluster? I waas using sink to get the data, but for large matrices it involves a huge amount of manual formatting afterwards, let's say in excel. Thanks many times Martin

Logon logging logs
I'm looking for a simple solution to log a single entry for each login to a Samba PDC. My current attempt(s) of using a root prexec script in either the [netlogon] share definition or the [global] section are working, but not exactly as expected. In [netlogon] I have an entry: root preexec = /path/to/script/makelogonscript.pl %g %u %m %I ...where makelogonscript.pl generates a

Ady -- Frankly, I was hoping for a somewhat less judgmental response, perhaps even a conversation. My interest is in expanding the usefulness of the the documentation to various audiences. I have noticed over a long period that there have been many questions to the list which presumably could have been avoided by having appropriate documentation. Many answers have been of the form "well

Without wanting to sound too pushy, I'm wondering if there is any update on the status of Mate now that Centos 8 has been released? Web Based Front Ends
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Can anyone comment on the "front ends" they are using to manage their ices/icecast streams? I have done some searching and playing with such web-based products as netjuke, and obsequium, and otto audio jukebox, but none fill the requirements exactly, and none appear to interface with ices/icecast the way I would like. Rather than have
