Reg: Porting UFS/VxFs to ext2 (fwd)
Hello Gurus,
Greetings.
I have been assigned some work on the development of a migration
tool. The requirement is that it has to migrate the data on a UFS/VxFs
filesystem to an ext2 filesystem.
What are the technical apects I will have to look into to achieve
the same? Is it possible to change the on-disk structure of the UFS/VxFs
filesystem to an ext2 filesystem? The question may sound weird but then
that is the requirement.
Kindly help me. Kindly...

ZFS root ARC memory usage on VxFS system...
Hi Folks..
We have started to convert our Veritas clustered systems over to ZFS root to
take advantage of the extreme simplification of using Live Upgrade. Moving the
data of these systems off VxVM and VxFS is not in scope for reasons to numerous
to go into..
One thing my customers noticed immediately was a reduction in "free" memory as
reported by ''top''. By way of explaining that ZFS keeps it''s cache in kernel and
not in the freelist, it became apparent that m...

Yet another zfs vs. vxfs comparison...
Hi,
sorry if I am brining up old news, but I couldn''t find a good answer searching the previous posts (My mom always says I am bad with finding things :)
However I noticed a difference when creating a zfs filesystem compared with a vxfs filesystem in the available size. ie.
ZFS
zonedata/zfs 392G 120G 272G 31% /zfs
VxFS
/dev/vx/dsk/zonedg/zonevol
400G 78M 397G 1% /vxfs
They are both build from 4 LUNs of the same size from the same array....
So where did the 8G'...

ZFS write time performance question
HI,
The question is a ZFS performance question in reguards to SAN traffic.
We are trying to benchmark ZFS vx VxFS file systems and I get the following performance results.
Test Setup:
Solaris 10: 11/06
Dual port Qlogic HBA with SFCSM (for ZFS) and DMP (of VxFS)
Sun Fire v490 server
LSI Raid 3994 on backend
ZFS Record Size: 128KB (default)
VxFS Block Size: 8KB(default)
The only thing different in setup for...

rsync for migrating oracle datafiles
Hi - a question for all ye rsync guru's out there...
I have a need to migrate some fairly large Oracle datafiles from a UFS filesystem to VxFS (VERITAS), however I am not being allowed nearly enough outage time to perform a standard file copy migration. The datafiles (of which there are about 4 are about 50GB each in size and on separate UFS filesystems.
I am considering instigating a local rsync copy between the two filesystems (From UF...

ZFS and VXVM/VXFS
We are looking at the alternatives to VXVM/VXFS. One of the feature which we liked in Veritas, apart from the obvious ones is the ability to call the disks by name and group them in to a disk group.
Especially in SAN based environment where the disks may be shared by multiple machines, it is very easy to manage them by disk group names rather t...

vxfs to zfs conversion
Sometime back it was mentioned in a presentation we had that there might be a tool to convert an existing VxFS file system to ZFS without the need to do a lot of manual copying of files, or downtime for an application, etc. Does anyone know whether this is correct and whether it will be available when ZFS is incorporated into a GA''d Solaris 10 update???

Can DTrace display non-instrumented function argument counts and types?
Is it possible to use DTrace to display the number of arguments and their types for userland or kernel functions that are not explicitly instrumented or documented by their authors? We''re talking about functions provided by Veritas VxVM/VxFS and the like, and for example, we might want to try tracing I/Os from App => VxFS => VxVM => ssd driver to see where I/Os get aggregated or broken up. But without being able to determine function signatures, it will be very hard to even begin such a process.
It would seem that this is po...

ZFS versus VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU
Hello experts,
We have a large implementation of Symantec Netbackup 6.0 with disk staging. Today, the customer is using VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU (disk staging).
The customer would like to know if it is best to use ZFS or VxFS as file system inside Netbackup disk staging in order to get the best performance possible.
Could you provide some information regarding this topic?
Thanks in advance for y...

DBWR write performance
I''m an Oracle DBA, a dtrace noob, and I''m attempting to resolve an Oracle write performance problem on Solaris 10, Oracle 9iR2.
The Oracle DBWR processes have poor write throughput writing to VxFS files. I suspect that the problem may be with POSIX readers/writer file locking.
Ideally I''d like to identify, for a given DBWR process, readers/writer file lock contention on a datafile by datafile basis.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated,
Kind regards, Michael

zfs and jbod-storage
Hi.
I''m managing a HDS storage system which is slightly larger than 100 TB
and we have used approx. 3/4. We use vxfs. The storage system is
attached to a solaris 9 on sparc via a fiberswitch. The storage is
shared via nfs to our webservers.
If I was to replace vxfs with zfs I could utilize raidz(2) instead of
the built-in hardware raid-controller.
Are there any jbod-only storage systems that I can add in batche...

What kind of system is that? How much memory is installed?
I''m able to hang an Ultra 60 with 256 MByte of main memory,
simply by writing big files to a ZFS filesystem. The problem
happens with both Solaris 10 6/2006 and Solar...

samba-2.2.6pre2 snapshot available
FYI...
I've just posted a snapshot of the current SAMBA_2_2
source code (tagged release-2-2-6pre2). This includes
all of the post 2.2.5 printing fixes as well as fixing some
other bugs (such as VxFS quota support). Please test and
report back your experience.
There have been some updates to the Mandrake packaging
thanks to Buchan. We are not building RPMS or *debs
for this pre-release. If you need to build your own,
see the files in the packaging subdirectory of the source

CIFS/ACLs
Hi,
I am using CIFS 2.01.01 on HPUX11V2. CIFS is running in ADS
security-mode. Winbind is used to map the userers from the W2K3-Domain
(german) to an tdb-file. The user mapping works fine, but I have
problems with the ACLS: setting the ACLS to a file or folder from
windows leads in "access denied". I'm the owner of the object and have
full access. The really crazy thing is,

Resizing partitions using OCFS?
...9;t found an answer for in the
docs, is how to handle partition resizing with OCFS.
We have found on our Oracle 8i/Solaris systems that we have the need on
occasion to expand partitions to make room for more data. Under Solaris with
non-shared storage, we do this via Veritas Volume Manager and vxfs.
However, it doesn't appear that this would work for OCFS and Linux. I suppose
to expand the underlying partition, you could set up the partitions with LVM,
and expand them that way, but I haven't seen any facility to expand the
actual OCFS filesystem.
How do OCFS users address this s...
