DOS wildcards w/ 2.0.5a
I've recently set up a new server running RH 6.1 and Samba 2.0.5a. All our older servers are running 1.9.18p10, and were left that way on the "If it ain't broke" principle. On the new server, I've noticed that DOS wildcards don't work correctly for some (but not all) old 16-bit DOS programs running under Win95/98. The symptom is that the program only

WIN95 OSR2.1 problem solved
Recently Microsoft introduced some network improvements which made it impossible to connect to Samba without using encrypted passwords. There is a way-around for NT4.0 (SP3) by changing a registry entry. This has been published by Microsoft in their knowledge-base. With WIN95 OSR2.1 and the vredir patch (vredir.vxd and vnetsup.vxd dated June, 2nd 1997 or later) the behaviour is very similar to NT with SP3. I could not find any hint from Microsoft, so I had to try on my own. If you want WIN95 to work with unencrypted passwords, you have to change the registry as with NT. However it is a diff...

Problems with Excel and Access files
Hello, I have a problem width some excel files in my Samba File server because when I try to open from a WinMe client, the client machine always craches width a error in the vredir.vxd and ifsmgr.vxd. I think is a problem in oplocks or something like that. In the mdb files, the MS Access tolds me that can't open the file exlusively! Can anybody help me? What configuration should I have in [Global] and [Files] sections? What unix permission should I have in the directory...

multi user access to 1 data file
I am running v2.0.7 and have set up a network drive for an accounting ledger system. The software is called MYOB and is quite popular in Australia. This is the first time I have to deal with multi user access to 1 data file. My setup is: Global oplocks = yes socket options = TCP_NODELAY socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY [MYOB] path=/home/office/MYOB force group = office directory mask = 0770

Updated Windos 95 Drivers to Correct Samba issuess.
The updated Vredir.vxd file corrects a problem deleting files on Samba servers running on UNIX- based computers. This problem can cause local files to be deleted. Samba and client oplock breaks over WAN
This only happens with PCs on the other end of a bridged 56k DDS line. It also affects DOS and W98 clients the same. Clients can log onto the domain ok, and browse. But trying to drag a file, or even right-click it in W98 explorer, cause the machine to hang, and eventually blue screen with a VREDIR VXD error. If I copy to Samba, sometimes it works, but then the file is zero bytes. Copying from Samba sometimes works, but then I cant delete the file locally, I get strange read-only or permission errors in Win98. Is there a problem with the lag of the 56k link somehow? I've seen some fail...

Files Updates
Hi, I have an Informix program that unload data to a file in a samba directory. Problem is although the file has changed, I still see the old data from my Windows 98 SE PC. I only see the updated data after refreshing the snmba directory numerous times. Sometimes I have to wait for more that 10 minutes !! Funny thing is this problem does not apply to my friend's PC. Why is this so and

SAMBA Performance on shared files.
...ch longer, up to 8/10 time longer. Is this a file locking problem? I know there's problems with glibc 2.1. I'm actually using RH 5.2 with glibc-2.0.7 amd SAMBA 1.9.18p10 and I would like to know if the glibc bug is also present in glibc-2.0.7. I'm also investigating possible bugs in the vredir.vxd Win95 file, but I get the same performance problems on a Win98 machine. I've also tried to use the NetBench programs to compare performance on shared Win95 volume against SAMBA on Linux, but those tests are causing to many problems on the network and I can't afford to log off everybody...

I've found that win95 (up to and including OSR/2.5) works quite a bit better (almost tolerable) with the system updates. At least two of them fix vredir problems, and many TCP stack problems too. security = server & encrypted passwords
Folks, I've missed the latest encrypted passwords thread, so forgive me if this is old hat for some of you. I'm running 2.0.3 with auth being handled by an NT PDC. It seems that some Win95 clients (namely those with later releases of the OS) have problems authenticating. I've got encrypt passwords = yes but it still seems only the old Win95 clients (clear text passwords) can auth

Nasty Samba Locking Problems
We recently committed to replacing our Netware server with a Samba server running on an old SPARC box (using RedHat 6.0). This seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I'm wondering... We have two labs of PCs (each of 16 machines, all running Windows 95) and we use PC-Rdist to ensure that the hard disk images on the PCs are kept fairly clean and up-to-date. The master disk images are

Samba 2.0.3 and NT/9x
Dear all, I recently upgraded to Samba 2.0.3 and read the doc files about NT machines because I cannot connect to the Samba server. In the WinNT.txt file there is the following proposal: [ --- Start of pasted text --- ] The following registry entry change will re-enable clear text password handling: Run regedt32.exe and locate the hive key entry:
