Suggestions for packages / help / index (long mail)
Hi R-users and developers,
This month may have seen one of the biggest thread never seen on R-related
mailing lists, the one about "GPL software" and "hidden costs" (at this
day, thread is still open - and active!).
Lot's of mails in this thread are not really relevant to the original mail,
send by Philippe Grosjean.
Nevertheless, most of the mails are of interest and

Still looking for more advice, tips and ideas on how to document this complicated area.
There's a lot of questions on the subject on the mailing list and we need some
advice on how to locate the source and what to do, how you can configure Asterisk
for various situations.
Any more writers volonteering? Step forward, please :-)

PS. Thank you for adding to the consultants list. It's starting to look very
impressive, covering large areas of the globe. Not many consultants with
working IP telephony connections listed, though ;-) Add your SIP or IAX
address, it's a proof of concept. We...

Winehq / WineX?
I know this is an incredibly simple question, but I don't think I've seen
anyone in this NG ask about it as best I can remember.
Basically, what's the pros/cons of WineX over the standard version from
Winehq? I have no problems with compiling from source, but in terms of
application support and suchlike, could anyone with experience with both
versions of WINE give any advice?

ROMA project (R Output MAnager) / Progress report / Call for contributors
Hello useRs,
This email is about the ROMA project, the implementation in pure S of a
reporting system for R. Several month ago, I did then send on R-help a
survey on that (mainly: what features did you expect for a reporting
system). During the following months, I did try different approaches for
the core functionalities, ending now with a set of generic functions of
which I am satisfied. More

How to select the scale parameter for Gabor transform (Rwave)?
Dear list,
I am trying to choose the scale parameter for the cgt transform but I don't
know how to do it. In time I would like to be able to separate points 30
samples apart, and in frequency I would like to separate bands 0.04 Hz
apart. I tried the two approaches described below and they gave me
different results. I would appreciate advise on how to do this.
The Rwave Gabor transform uses

Status of OpenSSL 1.1 support - Thoughts
OpenSSL developers believed that there was a need for a significant change. A part of that change was a conscious choice to break (some of) the existing API. They considered that pain unavoidable. So far I happen to agree with their rationale and approach. Move from visible internal structures to accessor functions is a good thing, regardless of what you may think of it. And the new API *is*

Status of OpenSSL 1.1 support - Thoughts
As far as I can see, here is a summary of the situation, and there's a
point to this, but I only make it in step (4), needing the first three
steps to set up a background to keep my own thoughts clear:
1) Fedora (via Jakub) shows it's possible to patch OpenSSH.
2) OpenVPN (via gert) shows it's possible to build a 'shim' of sorts
that allows code to work with libreSSL and
