FastR
Dear all, at UseR! 2013, the FastR project was announced by Tomas Kalibera, Petr Maj, and Jan Vitek. FastR is an implementation of the R programming language in Java using AST interpretation and specialisation for improved performance. Since, the implementation has been extended to support JIT compilation, leading to performance improvements. The goal of the project is to further the R community...

Should CRAN accept packages with non-R code that transcompiles into R code?
It may be possible to create an R-like programming language that transcompiles into R code (or otherwise constructs R objects and calls R functions). I'm not sure whether it would pass R check or not, I will probably try... But the bigger question is: Should CRAN accept packages written in such a way? I could email Kurt Hornik or Uwe Ligges, and ask them. However, I thought that I would ask

Coping with non-standard evaluation in R program analysis
Hello R experts, I plan to develop a tool for dynamic analysis of R programs. I would like to trace function calls at runtime, capturing argument and return values. Following a suggestion made some time ago on this list, my high-level implementation strategy is to rewrite the AST, augmenting call expressions with pre-call and post-call shims to capture the arguments and return value,

Dsync ignores INBOX when converting from mbox to maildir
Hi, I am trying to convert email box in mbox format to maildir++. It converts all folders except INBOX. For example: dsync -D -v -f -u 'info at example.org' mirror 'maildir:~/Maildir' prints: dsync(info at example.org): Info: Sport: only in source So it converts Sport folder, but INBOX folder is ignored. dovecot.conf contains: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

What makes R different from other programming languages?
My intention is to give a presentation about R programming language for software developers. I would like to ask, what are the things that make R different from other programming languages? What are the specific cases where Java/C#/Python developer might say "Wow, that was neat!"? What are the things that are easy in R, but very difficult in other programming languages (like Java)?
