performance loss vs dealing with an extracted/actual cdrom). Anyone have any
ideas where I may go with this? Using FreeBSD as the underlying O/S on 64bit
dual AMD Opteron hardware if it matters any.

...e same problem.
If using samba-3.0.13 without ACL's, everything goes perfect.
ACL's on causes the file to get marked read only.
Applied the Patch for MS Excel... No results.
Any ideas?
If you need any info, please ask.

Obtaining log level 10 for just specified user(s) (MS Word & Excel File Locking issue - still)
...level 10 only for specified users (aka ones having the problem).
Is it possible to do this? Log files hit like 5 megs in a matter of a minute
or two; can't accept that for every user on the system - and it's a huge hit
on I/O we don't need to take either :(
Any suggestions?

System Imaging
I am using Samba 3.0.20pre1 as a DC and I want to know if there is
something similar to Deep Freeze www.faronics.com (except open source)
for Linux. Deep Freeze automatically compares the software installation
on a client machine to an image on a server. If the client machine
differs, the client is automatically synced with the server. I want to
achieve this with Samba and a linux tool if

Could it be that we're using such an old version of Excel? Would a newer version possibly save it's files differently?
Thanks!

what OS do you use for Samba?
I'm trying to decide on a linux distro to use for our enterprise Samba
server. I like that there is a deb repo for Debian from samba.org, but
I'm more comfortable with CentOS (Redhat). I just want to be sure I
have a well supported Samba server and I need at least the 3.0.20
version so I can use the "inherit owner" property. I also want
automatic updates for bugfixes and

registering samba in wins
for some strange reason, our wins servers occasionally drop samba
servers out of there name space. to deal with this, I cron'ed a
restart of samba at midnight everynight. This was a quick solution,
but a lousy one.
I would rather have some way to have samba regularly send name
registration requests to wins. Is there a way to do this?
barring that, is there some interface I can query on samba

I have Samba 3.014a running. If I use the standard profiles definition:
[profiles]

writeable = yes
browseable = no
create mode = 0600
directory mode = 0700
then everything works fine. But changing just the path to
path = /home/%U/profiles
breaks it completely. I can curious why this doesn't work. The user
