PVAClone: new package for population viability analysis
Dear UseRs!
We are pleased to announce the release of our new package 'PVAClone'.
The 'PVAClone' package implements Population Viability Analysis (PVA)
methodology using data cloning. The data cloning algorithm by Lele et
al. (2007, 2010) is employed to compute maximum likelihood estimates
of the state-space model parameters and the corresponding standard
errors, heavily capitalizing on JAGS, dclone and dcme packages (see

checking for "viability" of a GUI component
Dear All:
The question: How do I check for existance of the GUI, instead of
checking the variable of the GUI?
I created a log window for several applications, they will check for the
existance of log window, if it exists, append output to it, otherwise,
create log window and insert to it. What I found out is that if I close
the X window of the GUI, the variable logwin still exists, confuse

Does anyone have any experience using an IMAP server to authenticate Samba

Two-way Anova
Hello,
I'm trying to do a comparsion on a large scale say 10L bottle of liquid and a small scale bottle of liquid 0.5L, I have 5 different samples from each and they are measured over the space of 8 days as % viability and the % viability decreases over time. However not all 10 samples got measured every day. How would I do a two-way anova on this in R?
Thanks for any help.

Al

difference of means as response?
...r R users,
I am looking for some advice on the proper construction of a mixed model
in R, using the difference in means as the response and treating
within-means residuals as a random effect.
I have a dataframe (my own, a snippet of which is given below) that is
composed of observations of pollen viability in flowers along tree
branches. Flowers (1 to 3 per position) were collected from apical and
basal positions along the same branch, and I'm predicting that the
within-branch difference between the mean viabilities at each position
is a function of the distance separating the positions, with tr...

over 200 queues, anyone?
Hello list,
one of our clients is going to be deploying a system with over 200
differently composed queues and 100 agents. We are going to do a full test
of the viability of this solution before deployment, but I was wondering
if anyone has experience of such a setup and if there are any obvious
problems or no-nos.
Any suggestion welcomed,
l.

BSD licensing has been demonstrated to work in practice, for similar
applications, by a number of high-profile projects, including those
associated with Xiph.org. I believe that in these situations, the freedom
and continued viability of the software is ensured not by legal
restrictions, but by recognized leadership in a community. Xiph.org is a
strong ally in that area, with a thriving and well-recognized community.
In the end, this is, by and large, your personal decision, as the primary
copyright holder. Either way, I have...

Mixed Models
Hello,
I've run a Proc Mixed function on a set of data in SAS.
The data was a result of an experiment that measured % viability over time and I wanted to compare a Large sample lets say 50L to a small sample say 5L. And compare the % viability between the 2 sizes to see if I get the same answer there are 8 samples of each size and the same 8 samples are tested every day over 10 days (day 0 - day 10).
Now, Given that the s...

python bindings for R
...is a very
flexible language for binding to other languages. I can envision two ways
of doing this ... wrapping R in some C code using the C interface and
exposing that to python or by exposing R directly without wrappers (not sure
if this is possible). I am looking for feedback/comments as to the
viability of this approach. We would be willing to leave the interface code
in the Open Source community, of course :)
Thanks,
Paul

linker adaptability ...
...e GNU ld/dl library source code.
The prospect of understanding and modifying all possible linkers is
daunting to say the least.
It's finally dawned on me that LLVM might have some of what I need already.
Would you be kind enough to examine the following wish-list and
comment on it's current viability
with respect to the LLD project?
1. to load and link a set of object/archive files into an in-memory executable.
2. to track the memory allocations attributable to each contributing
object processed with a view to releasing them.
3. to maintain the symtable in-memory with a view to updating symbol...

...llvm autoconf files.

Right now, I tried the last mingwin binaries of llvm-gcc (downloaded from your
official website) : I compared the results between what a normal mingw gcc and
llvm-gcc produce. In fact, I got a buggy x86 executable from llvm-gcc :///, so
I'm really concerned about the viability (?) of llvm-gcc in so far as I was
expected from it to be as accurate as the normal gcc version. So now my question
is : can I trust llvm-gcc for the standard architectures (x86, PPC) ? because if
x86 llvm-gcc produces erronous executables (and it is the case for me), I might
not expect much better...

[LLVMdev] new comer question
...ntermediate code either
ahead of time or at run-time. There was some work to incorporate LLVM
into Qemu (a dynamic binary translation system), and such as system may
be able to do this sort of thing for you. There is no static binary to
LLVM translator of which I know.
I cannot vouch for the viability of binary translation (I've never used
LLVM-Qemu), but the other two have worked successfully in our projects
at Illinois.

Gluster consulting
Thanks for the replies Joe.
Yes, it does seem that Gluster is a very in-demand expertise. And it's
hard to justify the cost of Red Hat's commercial offering without first
putting a POC in place to confirm viability.
Thanks again,
HB

DAGIR
Hello all,
The rich history of binary distribution formats based on LLVM
[0][1][2][3][4] has proven LLVM's viability as a launchpad for stable
platforms. However, issues with compilation time and compiler size have
suggested that the translator must do too much, i.e. LLVM IR isn't a
low-level enough virtual machine. So we introduce DAGIR ("dagger"), a new
portable close to the metal format, designed...

XCP: disk2vhd -> xenconvert (to ovf) -> xe vm-import
...So, I`m playing with the chances for:
- Create the vdi with xe vdi-create.
- cat .vhd > /dev/VG.../created-volume...
- and finaly use the .ovf to create the vm, attaching the vdi to it.
Of course, all of it has to be via scripts (.bat and .sh).
Do you have hints about the viability of this method? Is it possible
to create a vm from .ovf and cat or dd the .vhd to the logical volume?
Thank you,
Tom Lobato

[LLVMdev] new comer question
Hello LLVMers,
I am considering LLVM for a project, but I am not sure the handling of
(C/C++ or 3rd party) library code used by user program. My
understanding is that if those library code comes in native format, then
all the benefit of LLVM is lost on them. Can they be decompiled into
LLVM bytecode, or what options are there if I want to write a runtime
pass that has to analyze native code?

Samba record locking & PC db's
Fellow Samba-meisters,
I'm wondering if anyone can share real-world experience running PC
database apps (like M$ Access) with database files shared from a samba
server. How well has the record locking proven to work? I will be
setting up a small office network for a client w/ a Linux server running
samba as a file/print server and 4 or 5 Win95 clients running Office97
apps.

Introducing the binary-level coverage analysis tool bcov
...c and clang and three different build types,
namely, debug, release, and LTO. Finally, the primitives we use to divert
control-flow and update coverage are simple. One can imagine (and hope)
that extending bcov to system code, or other native languages, will not
require a lot of work.
However, the viability of static binary-level coverage analysis ultimately
depends on the compiler toolchain that produces the binary. Specifically,
we can think of two areas where compilers might help our tool by adding
extra support, or at least by not emitting code that is difficult to
analyze:
- Source-level covera...

Yeah, unfortunately that's all that have come forward as available. I
think the demand for gluster expertise is just so high and the pool of
experts so low that there's nobody left to do consulting work.
