simpleR or usingR package by Verzani
I am a new R user and so I thought I could start with "Using R for Introductory statistics" by Verzani. In order to use some of the functions and datasets I have to install the simpleR package which is is now inside the UsingR package. I did so using >install.packages("UsingR"). However, the functions such as "simple.freqpoly.R" do not work. I also tried to install the Simpl...

R book advice
I'm looking for a book for someone completely ignorant of statistics who wishes to learn both statistics and R. I've found three possibilities, one by Verzani ("Using R for Introductory Statistics"), one by Crawley ("Statistics: An Introduction using R"), and one by Dalgaard ("Introductory Statistics with R"). Do these books have different emphases, perspectives, or strengths? Should I just pick one at random and buy it?...

Variable name as string
Hello, from Verzani, simpleR (pdf), p. 80, I created the following function to test the coefficient of lm() against an arbitrary value. coeff.test <- function(lm.result, var, coeffname, value) { # null hypothesis: coeff = value # alternative hypothesis: coeff != value es <- resid(lm.result) coeff <-...

I still couldn't view graphics though. I don't know about the NA issue mentioned here. Strange behaviour
As an absolute beginner I'm reading and practicing with the Verzani doc to learn R. Now, being an expert latex user who wants to integrate graphical capabilities if R and latex, using the "Simple" library and the simple.scatterplot examples I had a go at: 1) Including the resulting graph into a doc.snw then compiled through sweave & latex; 2) Produ...

Book recommendation for newbie to stats and R?
...ur data using R. I found these titles that may teach me both stats and R: --Data Analysis and Graphics Using R by John Maindonald, John Braun --Introductory Statistics with R by Peter Dalgaard --Statistics: An Introduction using R by Michael J. Crawley --Using R for Introductory Statistics by John Verzani I recognize some of the authors by their postings here. Can anyone recommend any of these books over the others? I'm interested in a book that I can learn statistics by reading the chapters and working out the exercises and problems, therefore having access to many or all of the problem solut...

OK, this is very elementary, but I need help. I have looked in Verzani, past postings etc. Problem: I need to subtract the "length" date between "h4" and "a3" #which would be 4-1 I would rather not convert the two columns into four columns (with headings being "a3","a4","c4","h4"). DF <- dat...

gWidgets process management
Hello, I'm trying to make a graphical interface for an R function I've written. A common use for the function is to call it with specific parameters, and then watch the output as it evolves. There's not necessarily a logical stopping point, so I usually use ctrl-C when I'm done to stop it. I've made a gWidgets interface to the function that gets some user info and then on a

A simple simulation question
Hi! I would like to post the following question: I was trying to figure out how to do the simulation shown in Fig 10.6 of John Verzani's book 'Using R for Intro Statistics'. It is on page 290, with a description on the previous page. It seems like a simple thing... Just needing to duplicate a procedure. (Perhaps I need to do it with a loop?) This is what I was trying: replicate(100, { abline(lm(y~x)) plot(y~x) y=rnor...

[R-pkg] New packages pmg, gWidgets, gWidgetsRGtk2
I'd like to announce three new packages on CRAN: pmg, gWidgets, and gWidgetsRGtk2. --John Verzani 1 PMG *=*=*= The pmg package for R provides a relatively simple graphical user interface for R in a manner similar to the more mature RCmdr package. Basically this means a menu-driven interface to dialogs that collect arguments for R functions. This GUI was written with an eye towards simplif...
