Public Apology to Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore
...an Yew. My words were twisted and misinterpreted and I feel that there is a need to explain myself and set the record straight. What really happened It was sometime in Aug/Sep in the year 2009. The setting was in the Tampines Central office of Asiasoft Online Pte Ltd. I was having a ***verbal*** conversation with Melvin Lee, my new I.T. department manager, when he challenged me to complete an I.T. assignment within a specified period of time. Reading SPSS: underlying numerical codes
Dear people, I have got a question concerning the underlying numerical codes when reading an SPSS file into R. I used the package foreign and when I look at a variable I get the verbal codes. I would like to know how it is possible to get the underlying numerical codes as output, which are the same as in my SPSS file. Thank you very much in advance for your help! Constructing a histogram with words as labels as height as frequency?
Hi all. I need to construct a plot showing words on the x-axis and how many times each word was given as a verbal response on the y-axis as solid bar (frequency). Is there a convenient function to do this in R? I considered hist(), but I'm not sure how to construct the text file. Example: apple, 2 pear, 14 house, 1 beach, 5 computer, 15 Thanks, ~Caitlin [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

interpreting an LME regression result...
...ere's my problem: In a regression equation not accounting for the fact that people are nested in families, the result for Z variable is VERY strong (beta = -4511), but this result is much weaker when I use lme and account for people nested in families (beta = -2613). I'm struggling with a verbal interpretation of this result. Is it because the effect of Z within families is not very strong, but between family variation is high? ----------------------------------------------------------------- If my R syntax would be helpful, it's below: BIG EFFECT OF Z (using lm) summary(lm(Y ~ X...

assign() won't work
...uch as AIC value, loglikelihood value, etc. My best guess is, assign(paste("group","subgroup"),get(paste("group",subgroup",i))$aic This won't work, due to the restrictions of my the assign function. If you can't understand this from the code, here it is verbally: I've got a bunch of matrices to fill-in with information, all their names are part of this paste function (59 in total). I want to fill in the rows of each matrix with the information from every analysis provided for each group. (i.e. for ARMA(1,0) I want a row of the aic and loglikelihoo...

pseudo-R2 or GOF for regression trees?
...a firm sense of the state of the art. Could someone help me to quickly understand what strategy, if any, is acceptable to say something like "The regression tree in Figure 3 captures 42% of the variance"? The target audience is readers who will be interested in the subsequent verbal explanation of the relationship, but only once they are comfortable that the tree really does capture something. I've run across methods to say how well a tree does relative to a set of trees on the same data, but that doesn't help much unless I'm sure the trees in question are...
