Using Puppet for downgrading Varnish (circular dependency)
Hi all, I am trying to use puppet (2.7.18) for downgrading varnish cache on Centos Linux (6.3). Unfortunately there are two varnish RPMs (which seem to have circular dependencies): varnish-3.0.4-1.el6.x86_64 varnish-libs-3.0.4-1.el6.x86_64 When using "ensure" for downgrading I get a bunch of errors: err: /Stage[main]/Varnish/Package[varnish-libs]/e...

find with exclude directory
Hey all, I'm trying to do a find of all files with the phrase 'varnish' in the name, but want to exclude a user home directory called /usr/local/digitalplatform. Here's what I was able to come up with: find / -path '/usr/local/digitalplatform/*' -prune -o -name "*varnish*" Which results in this: [root at uszmpwsls014lb ~]# find / -path ...

Overriding package installation source
Hi, I use a module (for Varnish in this case) which has the typical install, service, package classes. -- modules/varnish/manifests/install.pp: class varnish::install { package { $varnish::params::package_name: ensure => installed, } } -- modules/project/manifests/proxy.pp class project:...

Varnish-ban-manager + vhosts
Hi guys. 've installed varnish-ban-manager ( https://github.com/dot2code/varnish-bans-manager) and I'm currently configuring it's DNS name. The thing is that I've set in Route53 (DNS service in AWS) to use name http:// purge.domain.com / pointing to http:// varnish_server_name.com/. The thing is, if I test with http...

Can anyone talk infrastructure with me?
...Pierce's advice about pfSense recently). Coming off that dedicated Firewall, I need a DMZ for web-serving, a private VLAN for database servers, etc and a private VLAN for my computers here that I use to do all the work behind the NPO. Here is where I draw some confusion. Where do items such as Varnish Cache, HAProxy go in relationship to firewall, DMZ, etc? HAProxy is a load-balancer, so It should do in front of web-servers so it can decide which web-server to send the traffic to? Varnish Cache is all about caching commonly used resources so it seems that this has to go in front too? Can th...

FreeBSD wiki offline for a bit
Hey, Due to a security issue in the moinmoin wiki software, the FreeBSD wiki will be offline for a bit. I do not yet know if the issue actually has been exploited in the FreeBSD wiki (haven't had the time yet to examine it), but I took the wiki down just in case. Note that even if the software was compromised, it was considered untrusted from the start and as such heavily sandboxed

enable caching in apache
hey all, I am serving up a couple of sites using apache with varnish sitting in front of it. When I check the headers for the site, this is what I'm seeing: [root at ops:~] #curl -I http://ref.mydomain.com/ HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Apache/2.2.15 (CentOS) X-Powered-By: PHP/5.6.0-dev Set-Cookie: PHPSESSID=rqetkvi6l54819fffdivkppo90; path=/ Expires: Thu, 19 Nov 1...

[OT] Oldest Telephone
While the rest of you were chatting about the smallest * server, I was sitting her staring at the telephone hanging on the wall. It is a Western Electric set in a varnished pine box with an earpiece you hold in your left hand and a mouthpiece attached to the box. You crank the magneto with your right hand to signal the switchboard. The two dry cells inside are dated 1935, and I'm throwing them away because they're leaking acid. Wouldn't it be a kic...

Update on protection against slowloris
Hi list! We tested mod_antiloris 0.4 and found it quite efficient, but before putting it in production, we would like to hear some feedback from freebsd users. We are using Apache 2.2.x on Freebsd 6.2 and 7.2. Is anyone using it? Do you have any other way to patch against Slowloris other than putting a proxy in front or using the HTTP accept filter? Thanks for your feedback, Martin

Sort logfiles at rotation time
Hi, I want to be certain that my apache and varnish logfiles are in strict date order when rotated. I'd like to run a sort command against them before they're compressed. I've had a look at the logrotate man page, and it looks like I can use a postrotate/endscript to do this. However, I can see any reference in the documentation for h...

EC2 -> EBS -> S3 ?
Greetings! I''d appreciate hearing from anybody who''s had experience with any of this. I''ve got a Rails app that currently deployed on EC2 with MySQL and am readying to move from a dev / prototype model to a full-scale production model. Right now I''ve got a single MySQL instance. I''m getting ready to move that to a master-slave setup. I''m

get a *structured* version of the puppet agent output
puppet agent --verbose shows a verbose output of the changes done by puppet, such as: notice: /Stage[main]/Logstash::Config/Logstash::Configdir[agent]/File[/etc/logstash/agent/config]/owner: owner changed ''root'' to ''logstash'' notice: /Stage[main]/Varnish/Service[varnish]/ensure: ensure changed ''stopped'' to ''running'' I''d need to make some analysis about these changes, but it is not trivial to correctly parse this output. is there an option to get an structured version of this output (such as in xml or...

How to get Rails 3.1's Cache store (FileStore) to work with Rack::Sendfile
Hey - I need your input regarding a problem I''ve come across. I''ll first explain what the problem is, and what I think the solution is. If I misunderstood how things work, please let me know. # The problem I''m using Dragonfly (on-the-fly file processing) to serve images. Dragonfly uses Rack::Cache to cache the processed images so subsequent requests are served by
