variable selectin---reduce the numbers of initial variable

my problem is like this: now after processing the varibles, the remaining
160 varibles(independent) and a dependent y. when I used PLS method, with 10
components, the good r2 can be obtained. but I donot know how can I express
my equation with the less varibles and the y. It is better to use less

categorical varibles in coxph
Hello,
I wonder when I do coxph in R:
coxph( Surv(start, stop, event) ~ x, data=test)
If x is a categorical varible (1,2,3,4,5), should I creat four dummy
varibles for it? if yes, how can I get the overall p value on x other
than for each dummy variable?

multiroot() anyone?
Dear list, Did anybody have something like multiroot(),
similar to uniroot() only for several varibles/function?
I know the difficulty several varibles bring. But for
nice functions, it can be useful.
We are thinking of writing one....I thought to ask first.

Changing factor to numeric
...re not numeric. I have now dropped the records with the
characters which are not numeric for this variable and want to change it to
numeric srotage type.
I have tried using as.numeric() function but it changes the values in the
variable to what I think are the ranks of the individual values of the
varible in the dataset. For example if 5.735 is the current content in the
field, then the new object created by as.numeric will contain a value like
680 if the 5.735 was the highest value for the varible and the dataset had
680 records.

newbie question about index
Hi,
I am trying to convert a variable a = sample(1:3,100,rep = T) represents choices into a 3X100 dummy varible b with corresponding element set to 1 otherwise 0.
eg.
a: 1 3 2 1 2 3 1 1....
b: 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 1..
0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0...
0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0...
Is there something like b[a] =1 existing? I could not figure this out myself.

How to pass a varible from controller A to controller B
Please, can somebody tell me how to pass a variable from controller A
to controller B. I am going crazy trying to work it out but I am not
getting anywhere. This has got to be a simple thing, only my ignorance
is holding me back!

I am working on getting NUT working with my Smart-UPS 900 UPS (with the C c=
able)
For several years, I have used the apcupsd product, but because of the
nagios support for nut, I am working on switching over.

but this giving an error megssage.
but by default increment 1 it is taking ,,,,,so what to do ,,

wildcards and removing variables
All,
Is there are a wildcard in R for varible names as in unix? For example,
rm(results*)
to remove all variable or function names that begin w/ "results"?

how to initial the R script
hi everyone,
I am wondering if I can inintial all of the varibles and vectors at the
begining part of my R script to make clear all the meanning defined
in another script runned before It is just similiar with the command " close

Je souhaiterai définir dans mon fichier environement.rb une variable qui
puisse être récupéré dans mes controlleurs.
Plus précisément je souahiterai initialiser une varible avec l''ip du
serveur qui héberge l''appli et pouvoir la récupérer dans mes
controlleurs.

Logon script problem

It says:

Where did Z: come from??? I never modified any path statements in the environment
varibles on the XP systems. I figured it was because the novell client was
installed at one time on a few systems and it had to do with that but it does the
same thing on a system with fresh install of WinXP PRO.
The weird thing is that with the novell client on one of the systems, if you check
