lower case forced on paths?

when I try to connect to something like \\samba\v8_C4_ss5 (note the caps) I
am told in the logs that /auto/v8_c4_ss5 doesn't exist.
Of course, it doesn't exist, but the capitalized version does, which is what
was typed in the "Run..." dialog. Is there any reason that the case in the
mount path is being altered? Is there any way for me...

newbie desperate for help
I just installed Samba for the first time. Installed and setup like a dream. Unfortunately, I can't login to save my life. The server appears in the Net. Neighborhood, but when I double-click to login, the login window give the following message:
Incorrect password or unknown username for \\SERVERNAME
Entering a username and password (from /etc/passwd) returns:
\\SERVERNAME is not
