Using local disk for cache on an iSCSI zvol...
I''m just wondering if anyone has tried this, and what the performance
has been like.
Scenario:
I''ve got a bunch of v20z machines, with 2 disks. One has the OS on it,
and the other is free. As these are disposable client machines, I''m not
going to mirror the OS disk.
I have a disk server with a striped mirror zpool, carved into a bunch of
zvols, each exported via iSCSI. I mount one of these iSCSI zvols...

OpenIPMI on a SunFire v20z
Hi all,
New to the list and (mostly) new to CentOS. We have just moved from
running RHEL to CentOS on our main production servers.
Anyway, I am configuring a couple of new SunFire v20z servers here at
the moment and trying to get the systems' management interfaces to work
fully under CentOS.
First issue was trying to install the openipmi RPM from the CD that came
with the SunFires, this RPM installs the source for the openipmi kernel
drivers and then builds them as kernel mo...

System time monotonicity
...is supposed to be monotonic but I admit I
can''t really understand the time code yet at least. I couldn''t find any
documentation on what to expect from system time. Any suggestions?
This seems to happen across all the hardware we''ve tried but this
particular case is a Sun V20Z with two CPUs:
x86 (AuthenticAMD family 15 model 5 step 10 clock 2392 MHz)
AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 250

NFS root mount problem
...;'m having a bit of trouble with my nfs xen installation and have
spent much time trying to research/figure out this problem with no
luck, so I''m hoping someone might be able to help me here. =)
I''ve successfully installed xen 3.02 on Linux RH4 on my Sun single proc
opteron v20z server.
I''ve installed what I believe to be a base Linux OS on a Netapp
partition
and am trying to create a subdomain referencing the netapp nfs mount.
The xm create dies with the following errors:
Making device nodes
File descriptor 3 left open
No volume groups found

Where & Why is my process sleeping a lot?
...right approach to figure out via dtrace where it is
sleeping and why it is sleeping?
In my current process, using truss -D shows that it reaches pollsys and
the whole process sleeps for 1.5 - 1.8 seconds before it awakes again.
Its the only significant process running on this two CPU (socket) V20z.
I am trying to figure out how can I use Dtrace to answer the question
"Where and why is the process sleeping?"
Any sample scripts will help.
Thanks.

Hi,
Has anyone successfully installed Centos4 on the newer AMD powered Sun
gear? I really want to hear if there are gotchas or lost/decreased
functionality.

AOE (Ata over ethernet) troubles on xen 2.0.6
I understand that all work is going into xen3, but I had wanted to note
that aoe (drivers/block/aoe) is giving me trouble on xen 2.0.6 (so we
can keep and eye on xen3).
Specifically I can''t see nor export AOE devices. As a quick background
on AOE, it is not IP (not routable, etc), but works with broadcasts and
packets to MAC addresses (see http://www.coraid.com).

fencing timeout- increasing min time
...something closer to 30-60 secs or more. Is this mostly a
performance impact or does it increase the window for corruption issues?
Looks like from the current code the min timeout is 4 secs.
For hardware/software details we're using CentOS4.1 x86_64 (clone of
RedHat 4.1),
on a cluster of Sun v20z's, Opteron 250s. The cards involved are Emulex
and multipath
is mdadm based.

Benchmarking Xen - Xeon vs Opteron. Will memory latency make a difference?
...? I''m wondering if the big (50%+) memory latency advantage
the Opteron''s have over the Xeon''s makes a big difference in the
context of a Xen host with multiple active guest domains.
Particularly at the moment I''m considering the 2-way situation with
the SunFire v20z vs the Intel SR1400JR2.

NUT and mge-utalk update
Hi everybody,
Sorry for the eternity it took to solve the UTalk problems, but I've been
busy on so many fronts...
I've updated the CVS Testing tree, which will soon become 2.0.3 stable
release, with mge-utalk 0.87. This release fixes the UTalk problems you have
recently faced.
If possible, please test it and report back if it work or not with your
unit.
To do so:

Has anyone done any testing with the Apple X Serve G5
(http://www.apple.com/ca/xserve/) or Sun
(http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v20z/index.jsp) Sun Fire machines?
I would think that something like the Apple could handle the IO a lot
better.

Samba4 does't run netlogon scripts and batch files
I've tried to move from Samba 3.6.14 to Samba 4.0.5. Process went smooth, Win8Pro clients joined domain successfully.
But now netlogon startup scripts does not run on clients at signin. Also .bat batch files from network shares does not executes (Win8 says do not have permissions) without execute bit set.
This is the right behavior? How to get back previous?

tftp with pxelinux.0 from syslinux 4.10-pre17
Hello everybody,
setting up a netboot server for a really huge network I decided to go with
what will be syslinux 4.10 to get support for http transfers.
The setup works on my notebook, booting another notebook directly connected.
However it fails with a more complex setup: A virtual machine on the
second notebook bridged to the ethernet device does not boot, systems from
other networks with a

CentOS and Dell Support
I'm a fairly experienced RH and Fedora user and admin looking to try
CentOS for the first time. I have lots of experience with Dell servers
and I'd like to stick with them.
Although I'm sure it's not always strictly enforced, Dell claims that
it won't provide warranty hardware support on servers installed with
an un-Dell-supported OS (basically, anything other Windows, RH, and
