...e server is a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 server, running Linux kernel 2.6.18.-128. It has 2 quad-core Xeon E5420 processors with 6 MB of L2 cache for each processor. The server has 32 GB of RAM. While the tests were run, the memory utilization was very low, and there was not much I/O. The CPU utlization was 100% for each core running an instance of R. Our theory is that the degradation is due to cache and/or memory bus contention between the processors.
