Ext3 Performance Tuning - the journal
...file server. I have some ideas what might cause the problems, and I want to try step by step. First I have to learn more about these areas. First I have some questions about tuning/sizing the ext3 journal. The most extensive list I found on ext3 performance tuning is <http://marc.info/?l=ext3-users&m=117943306605949&w=2> . I learned that the ext3 journal is flushed when either the journal is full or the commit interval is over (set by the mount option "commit=<number of seconds>"). So started trying these settings. I didnt manage to determine the size of the jou...

Bad directories appearing in ext3 after upgrade 2.4.16 -> 2.4.18+cvs
Hi, I recently upgraded one of my fileservers from 2.4.16 to 2.4.18 plus the ext3-cvs.patch that Andrew Morton pointed me to for addressing and assertion failure. Since then I have been getting lots of errors like: May 21 14:07:03 glass kernel: EXT3-fs error (device md(9,0)): ext3_add_entry: bad entry in directory #2945366: rec_len %% 4 != 0 - offset=0, inode=1886221359, rec_len=24927,

symlinking maildirs
I have some emails that I think are in the Postfix delivery queue going to Dovecot, but didn't get mapped to their alias (because I didn't have all the alias entries in when they were queued). I'm wondering if this trick would work. I have the mail being delivered to /home/mail/%Ld/%Ln/mail and am wondering if I could make a symlink at /home/mail/example.com/foo -> bar and add a

dovecot-SASL for Postfix: EXTERNAL does not work.
...about it, because the dovecot auth protocol does not offer the possibility to specify a valid-user-certificate-seen flag as well as pass the username from the certificate. (Or even pass the entire certificate as a base64 string, less postfix CA, .. or whatever.) [1] https://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=159785887710910&w=2 What is really terrible with the current situation is that postfix announces the EXTERNAL, with Wietse Venema saying Short summary: Postfix does not implement a single iota of SASL AUTH support. Postfix simply propagates the names of mechanisms that the backend...

STARTTLS MITM in Postfix
http://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=129952854117623&w=2 Dovecot doesn't have this bug. It discards all buffered data when STARTTLS command runs. (Why do I think I've heard about this bug before? Or at least the same type of way to exploit it? Maybe there was another similarly exploitable bug.)

disaster recovery
In a fit of irony, while preparing to burn a CDROM with some software I've been writing for about six months, I did a rm *>o instead of rm *.o on an ext3 filesystem. And I'm well aware that under normal circumstance you can't undelete, especially a ext3 filesystem. However, I need to at least *try* to recover this. I've built lde (linux disk editor) and if I can isolate a

Dovecot LDA (deliver) stopped working
Hello, One day a week or so ago, a server that's Postifx w/ Local users, dovecot w/ LDA decided to stop working. The only thing that stopped is the LDA portion, the rest all works fine. I also posted to the postfix mailing list yesterday but wasn't able to debug any further. Here's the situation: if I use mailbox_command to point to deliver, postfix will alway...

the Postfix packages are way too old
If you deliver more than a few emails to the outside world, especially if a good portion of those go to Yahoo, you may want to read this message: http://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=127689518629249&w=2 Actually, read the whole thread, it's interesting and the discussion still continues: http://marc.info/?t=127619611600001&r=1&w=2 TLDR: The 2.3.3 Postfix version that comes with RH / CentOS 5 doesn't do delivery rate control very well and has a hab...

Asterisk SSL support broken with update from openssl-1.0.0 to 1.0.1e, recompiling does *not* help

This source also claims that the most common cause is that SSL_library_init() was not called. However, I do not see anything in the Asterisk changelog that could possibly cause the call to be skipped. I see nothing out of the ordinary when configuring Asterisk using...

Multiple copies of a message
I have a problem and I don't know which part of the mail chain could be causing it, although dovecot does seem to be the most logical source. I get multiple copies of messages to my Inbox. I have just deleted 24 copies of a newsletter from Computer Shopper. The worst example I have seen of this had more than 90 copies. This doesn't happen to any subfolder of Inbox, just Inbox
