Handling userland char ** pointers
I''ve been trying to get access to a userland string that''s behind a
second level pointer using DTrace, but I can''t seem to get it to work.
I started with the example on the Team DTrace Tips and Tricks slides:
trace(copyinstr(*(uintptr_t *)copyin(arg0, curpsinfo->pr_dmodel ==
PR_MODEL_ILP32 ? 4 : 8)));

Is there any way to know if userland is patched?
Dear folks,
I'm recently investigating large scale deployment and upgrading FreeBSD
RELEASE. It's our tradition to bump "RELEASE-pN" after a security patch
is applied, however, it seems that there is less method to determine
whether the userland is patched, which is somewhat important for large
site managements.
So is "uname -sr" the only way to differencate the patchlevel of a security
branch? I have read Colin's freebsd-update script and to my best of
knowledge this is the only way (and, on condition that we have re-compi...

[PATCH] build: Define __EXPORTED_HEADER__
The kernel header guard to ensure that headers aren't included from
userland moved in commit 69c8f52b. This causes the following message to
be emitted when building klibc (which is designed to use kernel headers
explicitly):
/usr/local/src/git/linux-2.6//include/linux/types.h:13:2: warning: #warning "Attempt to use kernel headers from user space, see http://kernelnew...

Problem with userland/module versions
Hi,
I am using a centos 5.3 and after a kernel upgrade I've reinstalled the
kmod so it could copy/create the links to the .ko files.
When I start the drbd I receive messages like this:
DRBD module version: 8.2.6
userland version: 8.3.2
preferably kernel and userland versions should match.
I'd like to know how 'serious' is this difference (in terms of potential
problems) and if there is anyone using the kmod-drbd 8.3 version win centos
(rpm).
Regards.

FBSD 9.2 RC crashes running as virtualbox host
Hi,
after updating my freebsd amd64 box from 9.1 (r250841) to 9.2-RC
(r254276) virtualbox crashes the machine. Seconds after starting VBOX
the screen freezes and then reboots (probably a trap, cannot see it, as
screen is in graphics mode). The kernel modules of vbox have been
recompiled.
Going back to 9.1 kernel and matching vbox modules works.
In both cases VBOX 4.2.16 is used.
cheers, Thomas

Thanks really Leon very much w/ a very resourceful info. esp release notes
helps across minor versions. So, this is for a friend of mine, and I have
been told that they will not currently consider updating their userland
from 6.3 to 6.8 but only selected few packages. The picture seems to be
that their company runs a lot of apps on 6.3 userland and might have some
specific dependencies, etc., but more importantly, this environment has
been running in customers' environment for quite some time esp 1000s of

domU custom kernel: Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
Hello,
To compile a custom kernel, I downloaded 2.6.29.1 from kernel.org and
followed the tutorial at:
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/Kernel.org_Linux_on_Xen
Used a supposedly working .config file for the compilation (generated by
my provider to compile his xenU kernels), set /dev/xvd* device nodes
both in the domU conf file (disk, root):
disk = [

A couple of small, paid userland hacker projects.
Hey there,
I'm looking for someone to implement each of the following:
(1) Make pkg_add(1) not use system(3) to execute external programs to
do things that it can implement internally (i.e. calling out to tar(1)
is fine, calling out to mkdir(1) is not.) Alternately, rewrite
pkg_add as a sh(1) shell script, with perhaps a minimal utility
written in C (pkg_admin?) to muck with /var/db/pkg.

pygrub question
Hi,
I''ve prepared a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server on a Xen 3.2-1 host running
Debian Lenny on kernel 2.6.26-2-xen-amd64. The Ubuntu 10.04 domU is
running a 2.6.32-24-server kernel from the Ubuntu repositories, which is
(must be :-) ) xen-aware. The domU uses pygrub to boot and it works like
a charm.
Now I''m trying to deploy this domU on a Xen 3.2-1 host running Debian
Etch on kernel
