Re: Help with USB-to-serial cable
This is a general problem with the low-cost Prolific processor chip and drivers. You should invest in a better USB to Serial adapter (http://www.usconverters.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=67&products_id=244) with a FTDI chipset. It costs a bit more but its well worth the money. The drivers for the FTDI chipset are well documented and compatible with most devices.

Re: Help with USB-to-serial cable
...rolific usb serial adapters are very unreliable, especially with Linux and 64-bit systems. I have had several Prolific adapters (since they are the cheapest after all) but none of them have been working properly for an extended period. After we switched to FTDI based usb serial adapters (http://www.usconverters.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=67&products_id=244) everything started going much smoother, not only when installing but also when connecting devices. These drivers/chipset seems to be compatible with most devices.
