recommendations for web video bit rates
Hey, everyone. I'm sure this thread will generate some email!
Some people are working on a super-easy to use converter for people to
be able to convert videos to Theora for the upcoming Get Video on
Wikipedia push:
http://videoonwikipedia.org/
(Note that this isn't being pushed yet, and is pre-launch quality!)
For the converter one thing we'd like to be able to provide is a set

Can anyone advise me on running R and Rstudio on an AWS virtual machine
...sed to that too.
My suspicions that the errors are down to my broadband are the trigger but I suspect that such a set may be the only way for me to go quite soon as these particular data sets are growing fast (they're not huge yet, whole R saved session image is 28Mb). I can see being able to upscale a VM in the cloud is the sensible way to go. However, this is currently a bit outside my experience.
I have searched and found this from Amazon:

Emulate a lower desktop resolution for web browsing/flash
Hi,
My TV isn't big enough to read text when browsing websites (we sit far
away) and flash performance is awful at 1920x1080.
So I'm looking into ways to decrease the desktop resolution.
But my TV (Samsung 46" F series) only supports 1920x1080 via the VGA
connector - any lower resolution and it jumps to 1280x1024 which is
4:3 and makes widescreen flash content play squashed.

Speeding up image plots
Dear R-users,
I wonder whether it is possible to speed up plots of 2-dimensional
images (such as image() or levelplot()) in order to export lower quality
versions of the resulting plots.
I intend to export a large number of images in order to construct
animated gifs. For this purpose, I used the png()-function in
conncection with image() and levelplot(). But the underlying arrays are
so big

usage of --two-pass parameter with ffmpeg2theora?
Hello,
So far I used this command to convert video files:
ffmpeg2theora.linux --optimize --no-upscaling --videoquality 5 --audioquality 1 --contact=http://navratil.cz a.mp4
Now I'm trying use --two-pass parameter
with ffmpeg2theora 0.25+svn16645 - Xiph.Org libtheora 1.1 20090822 (Thusnelda)
if I just add --two-pass, then I'm getting
Could not set up the first pass of two-pass mode.

Using compression on SSD
Hi!
I scanned for relevant topics in the last two years but except for putting
a swap file on compress=lzo this march I didn´t found anything.
Does compression make sense on SSD? Or more specifically:
1) In what chunk sizes does BTRFS compress? How much data is affected when
a byte is changed in a 2 GB file or so? Can compression cause more writes
to the SSD in extreme circumstances?
2) It

[Bug 10673] nouveau can't use a Dell 2001FP in 1600x1200 mode
...ed panel size and force the driver to attempt to continue.
I've tried this, it doesn't work.
As far as I can tell, what actually happens with nv and nouveau on digital
connections is that the "resolution" we set is really just the size of the
framebuffer, which is then fed to an upscaler for scanout. In other words,
your panel is always scanning out whatever the BIOS set it to at init time,
which defaults to 1280x1024 because that's nice and conservative.
The nvidia driver, we can assume, just goes ahead and bangs the output
registers directly.
Experimentally, using RANDR t...

Font quality in base graphics
I am attempting to get publication quality graphs using R on Ubuntu. I
encounter lots of problems in using cex to control font size: for instance
cex=1.5 results in very blocky characters. I then tried to use res=1200
while creating a PNG file, hoping that this would solve the problem, but it
did not. When doing the above, a second problem appeared: the font size
relative to the graphics decreased

Samba as PDC with WinXP Clients -> headache!!
Hi.
my last post was about upscale configuration for my WinXP clients,
because I believed I had it working, but ...
Next day I booted the client and .... it wouldnt let me log onto the
domain again. :-(
I am using Samba 2.2.8a with Ldap backend which works great in workgroup
mode.
Joining the domain is very easy and works well...

Support for high DPI 4K screens
I was recently testing R and RStudio on a high dpi 4K monitor under Windows and noticed that the plot window cannot be scaled or zoomed without affecting the relative sizing of all plot elements (line widths, font sizes, legend spacing etc). RStudio seems to try to overcome this by enabling dpi scaling for the plot window on high dpi screens, but this results in really fuzzy text and graphics

[Bug 32855] New: Incorrect image stretching with Render in RepeatPad mode, NV50
...o their respective -image- files. (I will also attach the test results as
produced by my system.)
With the 24bpp image, the problem appears to be simply that Cairo's EXTEND_PAD
(Render's RepeatPad) is not doing its job, despite that I do see code in the
driver to implement that mode. The upscale is happening as if there were black
pixels around the edges of the single-pixel source image, instead of green and
white pixels as EXTEND_PAD specifies.
With the 32bpp image, in addition to that problem, there are also garbage
pixels at intervals.
I am happy to provide more information as necessa...

CentOS and Marvell SAS/SATA drivers
Hello all,
I've been on a real roller coaster ride getting a large virtual host up
and running. One troublesome thing I've discovered (the hard way) is
that the drivers for Marvell SAS/SATA chips still have a few problems.
After Googling around quite a bit, I see a significant number of others
have had similar issues, especially evident in the Ubuntu forums but
also for a few

Power aware credit scheduler
Existing credit scheduler is not power aware. To achieve better
power saving ability with negligible performance impact, following

Goal is not to silly save power with sacrifice of performance, e.g.
we don''t want to prevent migration when there''re free cpus with

questions regarding spline functions
Greetings,
A couple general questions regarding the use of splines to interpolate depth
profile data.
Here is an example of a set of depths, with associated attributes for a given
soil profile, along with a function for calculating midpoints from a set of
soil horizon boundaries:
#calculate midpoints:
mid <- function(x) {
for( i in 1:length(x)) {
if( i > 1) {

as promised description of my XEN HA setup
Hi all,
In threads posted by I believe Jonathan Tripley I promised to post my new XEN
HA setup. Hope it can be of some use to some people.
In this particular case I''m forced to use SLES 10SP3 with XEN 3.2, which
excludes the possibility of using things like cLVM (which I don''t think I need
anyway).
So:
