@llvm.memcpy not honoring volatile?
...;s probably not that useful, but I think the non-duplicating property of volatile is ingrained strongly enough that viewing a memcpy as a single load and store to each unit (in an unspecified order) should be legitimate; so I think this actually is a bug. As the documentation says though, it's unwise to depend on the behaviour of a volatile memcpy. Cheers. Tim.

ORC error: No callback manager available
...currently no local CCMgr implementation available, and this then prevents indirection support and COD layer support. BUT - apparently it can still function (maybe less efficiently?) without these? Is somebody able to clarify exactly what that error message means and what the limitations are? Is it unwise to use LLVM on architectures on which this error is reported? I looked through the LLVM V10 source code and there still seems to be this issue for systemz. Secondly, LLVM sends this error message to standard error. As a caller of the LLVM library, it would be nice to be able to redirect such messa...

...al login privs. (LDAP will handle all unix and samba accounts.) So, to that end, I thought changing the options in smbldap.conf, specifically... userLoginShell="/bin/bash" to something like userLoginShell="/sbin/nologin" Is there some unanticipated impact that would make this unwise? Is this the best way to accomplish the task? Finally, are there other places I need to handle this for it to work as I intend? TIA -Greg

single character in R, and how to manipulate it
Hi there, I just noticed that "crt" is a graphical parameter, which is stated as follows in the help page of "par": A numerical value specifying (in degrees) how single characters should be rotated. It is unwise to expect values other than multiples of 90 to work... However, I did not find any code example to demo the usage of "crt", and even know how to present a *single character* in R. It seems that R treats "A" as a string. If I wanted to rotated it in a plot, I could use "te...

Getting Rd pages right for redefined S3 generic
...ough I confess that redefining cbind leaves me a tad nervous, that all works OK so far. However, R cmd tells me (rightly) that I haven't documented the generic and new default. But I don't want to; I want ?cbind to point to the base package help pages, not to mine. Assuming that's not unwise (?), what do I have to do to tell R cmd that it should not look for Rd docs for cbind and cbind.default in my package whilst still having my generic handle dispatch correctly? It looks like one answer _might_ be not to export my redefined cbind - but will a local generic still work properly if it...

using a "third party" DLL in my package
...d proceed with building and installing the same way as if it had been source code. And it works, on my computer and his. Clearly this isn't exactly portable, and while that's ok for the use we have in mind (we both work on Windows XP) I have a nagging feeling this is somehow criminal or unwise at least. Why I want to do this might explain it a bit further but in fact the background contains another problem and I welcome anyone to give hints about that too. So, we have some Fortran code from way back which deals with fitting taper curves for tree boles, and some other functions relat...

But it seems that after rebuild stuff was changed (I really dunno, why). So, we'll go other way. In any case, it's unwise now to use published branches / tags :) -- With best regards, Anton Korobeynikov Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, Saint Petersburg State University

No xen kernel image for k7 anymore!
...e, even every k7 user will not be able to use xen anymore. The pae enabled 686 xen image will crash on k7 boxes. Dear debian-kernel-team, please rethink your position of pae-only xen kernels and reupload at least a working k7 kernel image again. Just having pae kernels in the archive is a very unwise decision. For me there is no technical reason for not shipping standard images without pae... Thanks, Ralph
