Apologies for the off-topic question; as usual I'm trying to draw

Please reply off-list if you can help me out.
A collaborator of mine found a formula we need, on sheets which he had
photocopied out of a book, some years ago. He cannot remember which
book (he's getting to be as senile and forgetful as I am, poor...

'parallel' package changes '.Random.seed'
...n my package I'm importing 'parallel' and so added it to the
DESCRIPTION file's 'Import:' tag and also added a
'importFrom("parallel", ...)' statement in the NAMESPACE file.
Parallelization works nicely, but my package no longer passes any parts
of its (unparallelized) checks that depends on random number generation,
e.g., the simulated data in the check suite are no longer the same as
before parallelization was added. This seems to be due to 'parallel'
changing '.Random.seed' when loading its name space:

Interesting remarks about R back in 1999
...thematician back in 1999 when he was talking about
statistics and computing. I found it interesting to share and I ask your
opinion do you think this still holds today or things have changed? Thanks.
?...we would also like to mention that in our opinion Mathematica provides
an excellent and indeed unparalleled environment for mathematical
statistical research. In comparison, no other computing environment provides
such high quality capabilities simultaneously in: symbolics, numerics,
graphics, typesetting and programming. Typically most researchers need to
develop some code to implement their methods....

A demonstrated shortcoming of the R package management system
CRAN, by relying on the powerful package management system that is part of R,
provides an unparalleled framework for extending R with nearly 20k packages.
We recently encountered an issue that highlights a missing element in the
otherwise outstanding package management system. So we would like to start a
discussion about enhancing its feature set. As shown below, a mechanism to
force reinstallati...

Can one set limits on new core dump?
Hi all,
Is there anyway to limit the new core dumping panics?
Can't find anything on it. (If I'd only looked in that ...)
Was my mistake, but winbindd filled up an entire volume
and froze out every process writing to that drive.
I started it from a shell and my soft limit is
already zero. (ulimit -S -c 0)

[LLVMdev] new IA64 backend
Hi everyone,
I've just checked in an IA64 backend to LLVM! Be warned, it's pretty
rough right now. Here are some of the known defects:
- No varargs
- No alloca
- No instruction scheduling/bundling of any sort
...or in other words, it breaks often and when it does work, it's a
dog. On the plus side, it _does_ have a tasty new pattern instruction
selector. :) Beyond fixing the

[Thank you!] IMHO only RHEL is better than CentOS...
...er unforeseen circumstances we've purchased a block of hours of OSS
support from a 3rd party vendor that is not tied to a specific machine
or platform. The cost is a fraction of what we were paying for RH
entitlements and is the same whether we have 2 or 200 Linux hosts.
Granted, we forfeit the unparalleled support offered by the upstream
vendor and wait (usually) just a bit longer for updates. For our needs,
however, this is acceptable.
