Migrate CentOS 3 to 4 to 5?
...I tried finding information on how
to best attempt this, but thanks to a plethora of contradictory
information my head is now spinning with a few rpm (rounds per minute).
The situation is as follows: Remote box at our host who offers CentOS
3 as the most up-to-date OS, unless you pay them an unholy amount of
money for RHEL or Windows licences. Popping in a CD for an upgrade
does not work for us. We can and will have the OS restored to a clean
post-install state prior to updating. I have little intimate
knowledge with CentOS, RPMs or yum, but general good UNIX experience.

[LLVMdev] Compile error in InstrSelectionSupport.cpp
ISSUE: line 474 of InstrSelectionSupport.cpp is a conditional expression
of the form (<expr> ? (ConstantSInt*) : (ConstantUInt*)), which is an
unholy mixture of pointer types.
ACTION: Apply static_cast<Value*> to the two pointers, as the source
intends.

explicit provision for it. If any reader has experience with this
issue, I would be grateful for assistance or a demonstrating

encountering an unholy convergence of packed designated bitfields or
whatever.
The existing ProcessBitFieldInitialization() is invoked for every
bitfield; it expects to be passed the same FieldNo pointing at a
previously-created initializer so it can modify a previously-existing
constant value. This is counter-...

USB 2.0 device on a USB 3.0 plug
...or setting that tells the USB to in a 2.0 mode ?
USB 1 and 2 used 4 pins. USB 3 ports have an ADDITIONAL 5 pins, the
original 4 are used for USB 1/2 operation, the new 5 only for USB 3
operation. they are effectively two completely independent controllers.
the combined protocol stack is an unholy mess of poorly planned extensions.

IO.read - binary by default?
Hi all,
I''m sick of hitting bugs in 3rd party libs where the issue is that the
authors didn''t do a binary read on the data. It''s hard to track down
sometimes and it currently makes creating cross-platform code more
difficult.
Is there *any* downside to making IO.read binary by default (on Windows)
that anyone can think of?
Thanks,

Problem solved! (Or rather, worked around...) The problem with the segfault
appears to have indeed been with alloca. There is a function _alloca in
libgcc.a that comes with the mingw32 distribution of gcc-2.95.2. After
examining the generated assembly code from envelope.c (and others),

USB 2.0 device on a USB 3.0 plug
When I plug in my device which is USB 2.0 into a 3.0 slot (cause that is
all I have)

I receive the above error.
Is there a flag or setting that tells the USB to in a 2.0 mode ?
Thanks,

read-only file system when trying to save files
I have installed emacs with yum and now I'm trying to create a .emacs file
and put some commands in it, but I can't type anything in the emacs
buffer. It says the buffer is read-only. I exited emacs and did touch
.emacs and I get a message that it can't do that on a read-only file
system. I googled around to see why this might be, but I can't see any
links on this. Any tips why

What's an Enterprise class OS
Hi all,
One of the concepts we see arise on the forums time and time again
that's poorly understood is the concept of an Enterprise Class OS and
everything that involves. I think it would be of benefit to have a one
stop page to point users to that explains the concepts and provides the
information required. Much of this content already exists on the Wiki
but it is scattered over many

Correct. ZFS-on-root-on-Ubuntu is still an unholy mess:

I run the following and then resize the window:

Y = X^2
opar <- par(no.readonly=TRUE, mar = c(2.5, 3.1, 1, 2))

File locks when restarting smb
Hi,
Is there a known problem with file locks when Samba restarts?
I have several servers happily running Samba on RH Linux, and several hundred clients running M$ Win9x.
There are always a large number of open files, and I am currently migrating the data off several NT servers and
onto the Samba ones. This has meant changing the smb.conf file on a regular basis.
I am restarting Samba using
