forcing apply() to return data frame
Hi All,
I am (almost) successfully using apply() to apply a function recursively
on a data matrix. The function is question is as.genotype() from the
library 'genetics'
apply(subset(chr1, names$breed == 'lab'),2,as.genotype,sep ="")
Unfortuantely apply puts it's results into a matrix object rather than a
data frame, tranforming my factors into numerics and making the results
useless.
Is there a way of forcing apply() to return a data frame rather than a
matrix?
Cheers,
Federico

Where to find old R packages?
...pens to old R packages? Is there a place where they are stored like
an archive? I'm looking for a package called ScanoR that doesn't exist
anymore on CRAN, the author doesn't exist anymore... I had made copies of
all packages (fearing that some might be "taken off the air" but
unfortuantely the ScanoR package was removed before I started making copies
in 2007). Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I did catch one, but the log file is huge so it's at:

using "aggregate" when variable names contain spaces
Hello!
my data set has many variables. Unfortuantely, many of those variables
contain spaces in their names.
I need advice on: how to refer to variable names in the formula for
"aggregate". See example below:
### Generating example data set:

"error in rsync protocol data stream"

At which time there is a large core file generated on the remote side

useful)
I assumed that it was a bad interaction between the local 2.5.5 and the remote
2.4.6, so I upgraded the remote machine to 2.5.5 as well, and the problem
remains. My local machine is an athlon running FreeBSD 4.5, and the rem...

Hi All,
I'm trying to get samba to work with a CUPS printer setup.
Unfortuantely I'm falling over at the first hurdle. I've installed

I've installed the following smb.conf file:-

detecting noise in data?
Hi all,
I have data which are unfortuantely comtaminated by noise.
We knew that the noise is at different level than the correct data, i.e.
the noise data can be easily picked out by human eyes.
It looks as if there are two people that generated the two very different
data with different mean levels, and they got mixed together.

process accounting on 5.7
...ed on process accounting and had a peek at the man page for dump-acct
but I am still left wondering how best to make use of this info.
We want to be able to produce some monthly stats on which labs are using
how much of our clusters. I know our clustering software has the ability
to do this but unfortuantely not everyone uses the cluster commands as much
as I keep reminding them.
Would be nice to be able to show that user X used Y% of the CPU in a given
month.
I've been googling but not turning up much more than how to install psacct
and run the base commands.
thanks,

Hard Ground (On Ring)
...ard ground on the Ring portion of the line. Looking at the setup we
have the NID connected directly to a 66 Punchdown block which then spans
out to an amphenol 50 connector that connects to the Adtran.
Could the Adtran be making a hardground anywhere? Has anyone seen/heard
of this issue before? Unfortuantely, my background is computers and not
electrical, so I am lost...
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

definitely has the functionality that we need, and all features and
functions seem to work well, and properly. The units are stable and do not
need constant rebooting or maintenance. Built in echo cancelation works
well.
Unfortuantely, the lack of any decent low bit-rate codec is making me look
hard at the Handytone 286/486 units [they support iLBC]. The code in my
Sipura's does not support GSM or iLBC. They also do not handle firewalls
well at all. NAT support seems to work okay with Register's set frequently,

Any idea/help on how to track down and solve the issue would be very

Unfortuantely however, there seems to be no log / dmesg data available

that there''s no strange output on the console during either bootup or
shutdown: All services / daemons start up o.k. and also during shutdown

If I insert an Intel nic (fxp), there is nil packet loss with similar

What is the highest quality codec I can use for recording voice messages?
I have looked at the codec's available but I don't know how get the highest
quality recorded message.
If a user calls in over the normal telephone network is this limited to the
carriers codec or the codec at the asterisk side?
Would I get a higher quality result using VoIP rather than the normal
network?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

we're all stretched pretty thin here.
