MD5-CRYPT/CRAM-MD5 vs SHA512-CRYPT/PLAIN
...looking at both variants:
1) MD5-CRYPT password scheme storage with CRAM-MD5 auth mechanism
2) SHA512-CRYPT password scheme storage with PLAIN auth mechanism
In my opinion the option 2) should be safer although it is using PLAIN auth mechanism. Of course I would always use STARTTLS and not allow unencrypted connection.
What is your opinion?

Can Dovecot reject unencrypted mail?
Hi,
Is it possible to configure Dovecot to reject mail that is not
encrypted. In other words:
1. If the user tries to send an unencrypted message from their MUA,
the server rejects it.
2. If a third-party tries to send an unencrypted message to the user,
the server rejects it.
The end result would be that no mail stored on the server can be
decrypted by the administrator.
I am aware that:
* "Encrypted" could mean a lot...

Disable Client Certificate Authentication for Unencrypted Connections?
I?m using dovecot to provide encrypted IMAP e-mail support for remote clients and it?s working great. However, I also need to set up a webmail front-end (Roundcube), which I?m hoping to have use unencrypted IMAP on port 143 (as only port 993 is available externally).
The problem I?m running into is that I want to require client certificate authentication on port 993, but dovecot is apparently requiring a certificate on all connections, which is preventing Roundcube from connecting.
Since dovecot is...

Encrypted IMAP only from Internet, unencrypted POP3 from internal network
Hi,
we have following situation: I migrated our company mailserver from POP3
only to dovecot with IMAP and POP. We need to have unencrypted POP3
from our internal network, and the subnet our mailserver is in.
Additionally, we now want to allow encrypted IMAP from the internet (for
some defined accounts), preferably with TLS (which means I open Port
143 in our firewall).
Now, how can I achieve that they can't use unencrypted p...

Dump Unencrypted SSL Traffic
I've got an application that I can run under wine. It uses SSL to
communicate with a server. Since it's using SSL I can't just sniff
the network packets. What would be the best way to have wine be able
to dump the unencrypted data to a file for analysis? If this
requires modifying code, which files should I look at?

Unencrypted Passwords
Hi,
Is there a way to make windows2000, xp and 2003 work with unencrypted
passwords as a domain member in a domain with a Samba Server as PDC?

Can I encrypt already existant unencrypted mail before I start using the mail-crypt plugin?
...to reach my goal. I plan to ask questions about those issues by starting new threads in this mailing list. But before I even come to that, I'd like to investigate the following:
The above documentation only addresses a clean install and doesn't seem to mention encrypting already existent unencrypted mails, like my server has. Is it possible to encrypt those before I start using the mail-crypt plugin, such that it will be able to decrypt those messages as well?
If it is, I am assuming that how I would go about achieving that will be very dependent on the ultimate configuration I have in mind...

Encrypted File Storage
Anyone got any experience/suggestions for a way to store a directory of
sensitive information on a CentOS box? This directory contains many scripts
and output files, I need it backed up but not unencrypted and don't want
to store it in a tar file type archive as when it needs to be accessed and
have scripts executed/data generated, it needs to be untarred/unencrypted and
I don't know the ramifications of this wrt recovery once its retarred and deleted.
I was hoping it could be stored somehow...

Auto-responder to handle unencrypted (and/or unsigned) email messages whose origin is not localhost
Hi, everyone,
I'm surprised how little exists on the Internet regarding this
particular subject. Given the recent headlines, that is about to change,
I'm sure.
I have a need to send an automated response to all senders who attempt
to send unencrypted and/or unsigned email to a specific mailbox on my
system. (Messages originating from localhost should be exempt.)
I would like for the auto-reply to include a customized message with the
appropriate public PGP key contained therein.
Has anyone accomplished this? If not, some basic theory as to h...

Unencrypted/encrypted passwords when connecting from Linux to Win98
...requires encrypted
passwords, I have set the "encrypt passwords" keyword in the smb.conf file
to "yes".
When I try to connect from the Linux system to the Win98 PC's and fill in
a userid and password, the dialog box clearly states that the password
will be transmitted unencrypted. So I am not surprised when the login
fails. However, I have no idea how to make samba transmit the passwords
encrypted.
I have left the other keywords (which are uncommented) as they were:
unix password sync = Yes
pam password change = yes
obey pam restrictions = yes...

Unencrypted passwords -> Encrypted passwords: can't revert WinNT4 to use encrypted passwords
...meter), I can map a drive just fine using the appropriate username
and password. It seems that my Win NT machine now has this plain text password
setting locked into the kernel or something. Another piece of info: using the
troubled WinNT machine to map a drive to another Unix machine still using
unencrypted Samba passwords is still working even after having deleted that
registry key.
Is there anything anybody can think of short of "format C:" that could get me
out of this mess? Thanks in advance -
