Underwater in 10 - 20 seconds
I'm running a X100P connected to a POTS line and a TDMP400P w/ two FXS
daughter cards. Both calling out from one of the FXS phones (internally) or
calling my home number (externally) the FXO card starts to freak out.
By freak out I mean I can still hear but it sounds like you are underwater,
there is an annoying hiss or buzz on the line as well. If I hang up and pick
up another house phone the hiss and buzz is still on the other house lines.
The only thing that fixes it is rebooting the asterisk machine / or
unplugging the FXO card from the wall.
Any ideas on what is causing this to...

How about 4KB disk sectors?
So, what is the story about 4KB disk sectors? Should such disks be avoided with ZFS? Or, no problem? Or, need to modify some config file before usage?

Using speex (newbie)
...'m using speex in a conferencing application and i have a little problem. I encode single buffer of 320 byte (160 short) and send it to destination where
i play it. The problem is that between frame i hear a "tick" so, if i encode single frames, send it and play it, i heard like to be underwater (because there is a tick 8000/320 times/sec ), if i encode many packet all together (ex. 320*3) the problem disappear because "tick" are distant. Do i have forcely to encode many packet? or is there a way to resolve this problem?
If i send and play not encoded audio all function properly...

Icecast 2 questions.
Hi Michael!
I found those files and played with them. The live stream seems
good.
When I stream in mono/64 the sound is clean, but sending a playlist of
ogg files makes it all sound like it's underwater. :(
Maybe I have something messed up in the playlist config. It didn't
like when I changed it from 2 to 1 channels. I guess the samplerate and
channels is dependent on the ogg file being re-encoded.
The OGG stream of the live broadcast sounds a heckuva lot clearer
than a MP3 of similar...

Polycom 501 horrible echo
I have the following situation:
Asterisk 1.2.1
25+ Polycom 501 telephones. Bootrom 2.6.2.0032 Application 1.6.2.0041
Some 501's local to my network, some across the great INTERNET divide.
PRI connected to Sangoma card.
Issue: horrible echo (and squeals, and "underwater-like" sound) on speaker
phone when calling from extension to extension.
echo not present when calling outbound using PRI or when receiving calls
from PRI.
echo not present when using handset or headset in any case.
All gains, etc. are as listed in the Polycom Admin Guide.

audio preprocess questions
Jean Marc,
I have been fiddling around with preprocess to try to get it sounding
less metallic/underwater- so based on some things said recently,
I have been first fiddling with mean_post and mean_prior to try to
get them to do change the update rate, so that update_noise gets
called at the right times.
Haven't made it too deep into the code, but I have a few
questions in speex_preprocess:
Is the...

Basic Question about use of R
Dear Sirs:
I am not yet a user of R. My background includes the use of (Turbo)
Pascal for scientific analysis of underwater acoustics problems (e.g.
sound ray tracing and array gain in directional noise fields.)
I have become interested in the following type of problem:
(1) select , say, 1000 random locations within the continental United
States;
(2) characterize (statistically) the probabilities of:
(a) distance...

Questions about the denoiser
...I could tell nothing new
in the denoiser in cvs)
Audio input: 32bit float - 48000 sample rate (the
input starts from jackd)
The first thing I am finding is that I can understand the audio in a low
noise environment, but even listening with low noise I can hear what I
call an underwater sound in the background. Kind of pops and clicks
that sound like digital water. The second thing is that as the noise
gets more aggressive the beginnings and ends of words (or sentences if
the words run close enough together) seem to get garbled. When there is
low noise and the person is talki...

Help needed regarding Echo Cancellation
...values of it are 0
[zero].
-- Since the values are small, I applied AGC on echo
frame with another Speex preprocessor before passing
it to EC. With this approach and echo tail 400ms, I
get very good echo cancellation. But some times we get
distorted audio, sounds like someone speaking in pipe
or underwater.
-- Is there any possibility to get distorted audio if
we apply speex AGC on echo frame before passing it to
EC?
3:
==============
-- Is there any tradeoff that if echo cancellation
becomes more aggressive, the voice quality will fall
or will be distorted?

echo / delay problem
...xgain. below is my current zapata.conf file
All help would be grateful. I have tried and tried for 2 weeks
it is rather annoying and irating to hear this delay/echo
I would call it a delay since you can hear the end of the sentence repeat
over
and over. Also every now and again it sounds like a underwater submarine
with ping and all.
Thanks in advance
Barry

Oggenc ideas / source and request
...executable from this source
with the same compiler witch was used to the beta3 encoder (for Win9x),
because it seems my Watcom C compiler doesn't like some parts of the
encoder (but the decoder works properly), and the compiled program
makes a bad quality ogg file (sounds like a bad mp3 file (underwater
effect)
on 128 kbit/s) ...
And please send that compiled program (exe) to me...

ps. I hope the program doesn't contain too many bugs

Comparison between Ogg Vorbis and LAME
...Later on the song, when the dance part
comes, I can\'t tell squat. I\'ll try and describe the differences.
Results:
Let me tell you that it\'s possible to tell that the VBR MP3 is quite damaged in
comparison to the original, missing high frequencies and having problems
with \"underwater\" wavy sound.
The VBR MP3 done with -V 2 suffers from the same problems, except for the
underwater sound. Both MP3 sound like recorded on high-quality tape (a little
wobbly due to the tape engine, and loss of high frequencies that is
unavoidable).
Oggenc Q1 sounds distinctly like a 96 kb...

Hi, we are modelling dusky grouper distribution using underwater visual
census. Our response variable is the abundance of groupers but we want to
see differences in habitat related to maturity because dusky groupers use
different habitats when they're juveniles versus adults. So we're using the
% of maturity.

Music On Hold pain - suggestions?
...", "300") in new stack
-- Started music on hold, class 'default', on SIP/telco1-0c4b
However, what I actually get on the phone sounds like ectoplasmic
utterances from the souls of the damned. It's sort of this high-pitched
fuzzy static, with something perhaps akin to underwater collision noises
occuring sporadically.
I thought at first that whatever was playing my mp3s was just getting the
playback rate very wrong, but replacing /usr/bin/mpg123 with a shell script
that touches a file indicates that mpg123 is never being called at all. I
don't know what is generating...
