Bagplot
Has anyone ported the Bagplot function by Rousseeuw, Ruts, and Tukey from S to R? The S function comprises a script and a FORTRAN function. I assume porting is relatively uncomplicated, but since I have not done any porting before I would not want to invest the effort if a port is readily available.

money data types
...is best for storing currency? I''m trying to come up with a reliable cross-database solution for rails that is not too complicated. Since I''m going to have currency fields all over the place, I''m not so sure that using two integer fields for each amount would qualify as uncomplicated. I''d like to be able to use database functions like SUM to retrieve totals, so I don''t want to have to split this information off or make it so normalized that queries become heinous. Sorry if this issue has been discussed on the rails forum before but I couldn''t find m...

I was thinking that it would be nice to have a full backup followed by a set of incrementals, and software that allows access to the state of the system for any specific date (similar to a source control system), but it may be that nothing free and/or uncomplicated will offer such a feature. Special Delivery from China
I received a sample IP/Speakerphone from my friends in China today. Asterisk setup was fairly uncomplicated and I had it running as an extension on my server within a few minutes. Sounds quality of both the receiver and the speakerphone are fine (wife's opinion). Are there any tests I should run with this phone? Following are the specs: - Single line appearance - Alpha display, 2x16 chars - Config...

read.spss in R 2.1.0 & make basic dataframe
...ements It is possible to use "as.matrix", and then "data.frame" the result of "as.matrix", but this gets a bit cumbersome. The question is: Is there a simple command to strip additional attribute characteristics from a data.frame and get a simple, easy to use, uncomplicated data.frame? On a related note, do other users routinely use read.spss with the defaults of "to.data.frame=F" or "use.value.labels=T"? My experience is that I am always using the non-default values in which case it would be helpful to change the defaults to "to.data.fr...

I really hope to be able to restore some basic rules of my firewall, because I am not a good unix user, so I know ufw, the is the uncomplicated firewall, but nothing about iptables. anyway, a complete deletion of all rules solved. XP-machines cannot join Samba PDC with tdbsam
...figuration with this tdbsam as the passwd backend, with the same smb.conf as today (please have a look above) I had run with an early version of Samba 3 on a 32bit Server in 2005 with nearly 50 XP-machines as Domain-members. In 2006 I had the first migration of a newer 64bit hardware, this was uncomplicated, all things worked properly with meanwhile 150 XP-machines. Now I had a new hardware-migration of a new 64bit-Server-hardware two weeks ago and I run into some troubles. I did the migration in the same way as before. I stopped the old Server and I copied the /etc/samba/smb.conf with all the scr...

lattice add a fit
What is the way to add an arbitrary fit from a model to a lattice conditioning plot ? For example xyplot(v1 ~v2 | v3,data=mydata, panel=function(...){ panel.xyplot(...) panel.loess(...,col.line="red") } ) Will add a loess smoother. Instead, I want to put a fit from lm (but not a simple straight line) and the fit has to be done for each panel

Samba PDC + WinXP = problems fetching remote profiles
Hi, everybody! I have 20 WinXP client machines and a sever running Samba (first try was with 2.2.8, now it's 3.0.0rc1). If it matters to someone (for statistics, fun or for understanding the problem), i use Slackware 9.0 Linux, kernel 2.4.20 on server (and clients are XPpro/SP1, buld 2600 as far as i remember). I almost had no problems configuring samba for browsing and fortunately i
