ext3->ext2->ext3 and unclean umount
Suppose I have the latest and greatest e2fsprogs. >From reading the docs I understand that 1) boot ext3, clean umount - you can remount ext3 or ext2 2) boot ext3, unclean umount - you can remount ext3 - you can e2fsck and remount ext2 Does this mean that normal linux init script e2fsck will do it, in case fstab says ext2? Or you should make sure to run e2fsck by hand with -f? 3) boot ext3, clean umount, boot ext2, unclean umount - what happens if you try mount wit...

Should fs_passno in /etc/fstab be always set to 0
That seems to be the indication given by this webpage http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/ext3/ext3-usage.html However, default install of Redhat 7.2 setsup fs_passno(6th field of /etc/fstab) as 2 which asks you if you want to run fsck after an unclean shutdown The question is, is fsck required after an unclean shutdown or should one just rely on journal replay. What does fsck do when it sees an unclean ext3 filesystem Regards, Yusuf -- Yusuf Goolamabbas yusufg@outblaze.com

AW: How to improve the quality of curve/line plots?
Thanks for the tip using a smoothing technique before plotiing in order to get a curve instead of a line connecting the observations. But that's not the solution for my main problem with the "unclean" line plot. In order to show my problem let's take this simple example: > xval <- c(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) > yval <- c(10, 30, 40, 50, 70, 90, 100, 110) > plot (xval, yval, type="l") If you look to the result in the graphic window you will see that the line seem...

In both, I see the following systemd's error after a few minutes: systemd-journald[779]: File /run/log/journal/3abe0470ce564669b797cb4c416f1ac0/system.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing. Is it a bug? Or do I need to change some option in journald.conf's file? Actually, I have changed Storage's option to "volatile". Thanks. -- Greetings, C. L. Martinez

[PATCH 1/3] Fix RHEV cleanup on unclean shutdown
...leanup was not happening properly if a migration to RHEV was killed prematurely with a Ctrl-C. Firstly, the SIGINT and SIGQUIT handlers were not being registered early enough in virt-v2v.pl. Secondly, if Ctrl-C killed the guestfs qemu process first it would deliver a SIGPIPE to v2v, which caused an unclean shutdown without cleanup. unclean file system
..., we''re still having trouble mounting partitions when xeno-linux boots. We give a physical grant of one of our newly made paritions (/dev/hda14 in particular) to the domain. But when we start a xenlinux domain we get error messages saying that "Your systems appears to have shut down uncleanly". It then proceeds to check the root file system and runs fsck on it, which goes fine. It tries to activate swap but it can''t seem to find /dev/hda3. These seem odd but not critical. Then it tries to do fsck on /dev/hda1 (boot) and we get a error message saying "The superbl...

Re: removing external journal

I think he means "needs_recovery" - EXT3_FEATURE_INCOMPAT_RECOVER set when journal recovery is needed after an unclean shutdown. What you want is to run (per the tune2fs(8) man page, maybe something should go into the e2fsck(8) man page as well?): tune2fs -f -O ^has_journal /dev/XXX e2fsck -fp /dev/XXX tune2fs -J device=/dev/YYY /dev/XXX This will remove the journal from the filesystem, run e2fsck to fi...

Re: This QEMU doesn't support the LSI 53C895A SCSI controller
...and manual virt-win-reg have a significant shortcoming: when used on non-cleanly-shutdown images, the act of opening the NTFS filesystem alters the journal/filesystem state. In one planned lab test I found some file to be corrupted after running virt-win-reg, and I traced back the cause to the unclean NTFS shutdown/mounting. Adding a supported controller will prevent any issue: even with an unclean shutdown, the machine will boot and replay its NTFS journal. If needed, it can also run the proper Windows filesystem checking tool (chkdsk) which is, as far I know, better positioned to correct...
