Digital Ear evaluation of Vorbis beta 4
...siological model of the ear based on work by Frank
Baumgarte) has just finished rating the sound quality of Vorbis beta 4 at
128 kbs using 30 random 10-second selections of music:

Two samples on which the Ear says Vorbis performed uncharacteristically
poorly are on my iDrive at:

as s27VorbisTest.wav and s37VorbisTest.wav.
After listening to them, I can probably agree with s37, which has a nasty
laserbeam-like artifact starting at about 7.5 seconds, in addition to a...

Possibly missing e-mail
Regarding your email to a Sonic.net customer:
Due to a problem with an e-mail server, it appears that we may have lost or
deferred some percentage of the e-mail that was received here at Sonic.net
on Tuesday and early Wednesday morning.
Internet e-mail transport is designed to be completely fail-safe, and in
fact the logs on the server indicate that it was successfully making
deliveries, but it

List problems
Hi all, is it just me or has this list stopped working. I haven't
received anything for a couple of days now.
Cheers,

again. When it comes to residential Internet, I am quite cynical
towards monopoly ISPs like Comcast... so maybe they saw the constant
pings and knew I was building a solid case and fixed the problem. Or
maybe enough people in my area complained of similar problems and they

I haven't been there in a while, but in the past, I've gotten a lot of
utility out of the DSLReports Forums[1]. There are private forums
that will put you in direct contact with technical people at your ISP.

Spotty internet connection
How do you IT guys diagnose the problem with a spotty internet connection?
Just spent an hour on the phone with TWC/Spectrum. Of course they don't see
anything wrong with their service.
They send me to speedtest.net. The first attempt, the page didn't fully
load, the second attempt, the page didn't load at all, the third attempt, it
loaded.
On a 20/2MB line I get 24.83/2.47MB. The

[O/T] undergrads and R
Dear R People:
Are your undergraduate students receptive to learning R, as a rule?
Most of the time, mine really like it. But this semester, they act as
though they are being eaten by rats when learning R. They are not
trying at all.
Any similar experiences? If anyone has any good ideas, I would be
THRILLED to hear them, as I am using R in Summer School.
Thanks,
Sincerely,
Erin Hodgess

ext3 performance mystery
Help solving a performance mystery would be welcome.
I have two test programs:
* one totally CPU bound (it just infinitely loops)
* the other I/O bound (it loops, each time doing
* a write,
* an fsync or fdatasync (I get similar behavior with either),
* an lseek to back up to the same position again
Under ext2, if I run these two together, they each run nearly as fast
as
