...hashing need not be delayed until after the end of output, only after the start of output. For example, nbdcopy could maintain the highest offset up to which the output is contiguous, and on a separate thread, it could be hashing the output up to that offset. Considering a gigantic output, as yet unassembled blocks could likely not be buffered in memory (that's why the writes are unordered in the first place!), so the hashing thread would have to re-read the output via NBD. Whether that would cause performance to improve or to deteriorate is undecided IMO. If the far end of the output network blo...

managing belongs_to fields in a form
Hi all, I cannot find a clean way to create/edit an object that ''belongs_to'' another one, just by using form fields. I always need to explicitely unassemble it, store the master id in a hidden field, and then refetch the master from its id, and put it back in the object. To summarize: I want to create a new member, for a given project @project= ... @member = Member.new (:project => @project) => in the view, if I have a form with...

toasted ext3 filesystem under lvm2
...hat it should, and also, I just don't want to type every last number...). But it doesn't seem likely to bear fruit, really. I also ran memtest86 on the system that had the trouble for a little over an hour, but found no errors. The machine was a $299 deal from bilsystem.com, which arrived unassembled. However, it's been stable until now, other than a time I had to replace its RAM. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'd really like to get this data back! PS: I wrote something very much like e2extract for the atari 800 when I was in high school... If anyone has any thoughts ab...

Hardware RAID Controller
Hi Everyone, Has anyone had any experience of using the Promise FastTrak SX4000 or SuperTrak SX6000 IDE RAID Controllers under Centos (if it matters I'm using version 4). I've seen it listed on linuxcompatible.org as working but would prefer to find out any first-hand experince before I buy. I'm looking to build a new mini server based on Mini-ITX and have found a great 1U case

Evolution Filters
Hi, I have just switched from using Thunderbird to Evolution on Centos 4.2 for my IMAP email and seem to be having problems with the filters. The filters I have created a really simple, such as checking for the [CentOS] in the subject line of this lists postings. The filters don't however get applied automatically, I have to select all the message in the inbox and manually select

Be sure to hit the 3Ware site to read about _incompatible_ risers! At 66+MHz PCI/PCI-X signaling, many cards/risers have issues. Many are only designed for 33MHz. -- Bryan J....

kickstart from cd
Howdy, Was wondering if anyone on the list has successfully created a kickstart cd. I get the thing burnt, looks good, I can browse all the files, but when I actually boot from it I can't get it to admit the ks.cfg exists. I *have* been successful with kickstart over http; just can't seem to make it happen from the cd. Pointers appreciated, I've been mostly looking at the

yum update - Glibc Problem
Hi, I've just done a fresh install of Centos 4.0 on a Via C3 Based system using the Centos DVD I downloaded a while ago. Then install goes though fine as does running 'yum check-update'. However when running the actual 'yum update', it downloads all the headers but afterwards displays the following errors:- --> Processing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.3.4-2 for package:

Video Recording
Hi, I would like to record some training/advertising videos, in a similar format to those offered by CBT Nuggets (and others). Essentially this means I need to be able grab real video (e.g. webcam or DV camcorder, etc) as well as what is on the computer screen (VNC Recorder maybe) and audio. In terms of output I would like it to be in Ogg Theora format as these seems to be supported both on

List of users on system
Hey All, Does anyone know of a way of getting a list of all the users on a system though PAM. I know that I could just list the /etc/passwd file but I'm trying to write something that is more generic and will also work for NIS or LDAP (etc) lookups. I suppose it is probably unlikely to be there as it is probably a security risk. I need to globally update the password aging settings

Rewriting outgoing email addresses
Hi Everyone, I have a query which I hope others may find interesting as well. The company that I work for has users that subscribe to many different mailing lists for marketting and informational purposes. What I would like to be able to do is centrally manage this internally so that only one copy of the message is received regardless of the number of people subscribed to each list which we

Using 2 PhoneJacks with Asterisk for Data calls.
Hi, I have recently discovered the project along with the PhoneJacks produced by quicknet, they could be the answer to something I have been looking into. I would like to be able to test using a dial-in server & possibily also a Windows RAS server, however I only have 1 phone line. I was thinking that I create a setup like that illustrated below to solve the problem:- Ext 1000

Gathering EventLog Information from a remote server or workstation
Hi everyone, I've recently begun looking into ways of automating the monitoring of all my servers. Whilst most of the Linux/BSD stuff is sorted, I am having more difficulties gathing the details of the Windows Boxes. The main source of problems is how to retrieve the event log details from a remote machine. During my research I came across some old mailling list articules in 1999 regarding

RHEL / Mini-ITX
Hi Everyone, I'd be grateful if anyone can help with a couple of queries I have. Recently I downloaded Centos 3.3 and cannot get it to install I my system. The system I am using to install is a based on an original EPIA Mini-ITX m/board. At a certain point in installing it comes up with an error saying something like "system not supported". Can anyone advise if they have got

Max FIFO buffer size - Log Reporting
Hi Everyone, I need to be able to create a summary report of all relevent syslog entries that is then emailed weekly. The idea I have for this is to pipe the syslog entries (logged from many hosts UNIX-Like and Windows) out to a a named pipe (say /var/log/logpipe) that is then read periodically by a perl script started from cron. The perl script then filters the log entries (probably using

Kickstart from FTP or USB
Hey Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has managed to do a network install where the kickstart file is located either on an FTP site (which is also where the packages are stored) or on a USB flash drive. I've tried starting the installer with "linux ks=/dev/sda/ks.cfg" or "linux ks=/dev/sda1/ks.cfg" or "linux ks=ftp://what.ever.Ip.address/pub/ks.cfg" but

Software RAID muck up
Hi, I hope someone can help. Just started to play with software RAID on Centos 3.5 and was trying to simulate a faulty drive by using the -f switch on mdadm to mark the partition (drive) as faulty and I then I removed and readded the drive, which quit happily rebuilt according the /proc/mdstat and the output from the --detail switch of mdadm. After all this mucking around I shutdown the

Adding/Removing Headers with Sendmail
Hi, I posted this query a few weeks ago but never received a response. I'm guessing that I didn't put things right, so here is another go. The company that I work for currently has email addresses in the format of:- firstname.surname.ext at example.com Which we use for various marketing campaigns (therefore the .ext bit is variable). Currently we have this setup as distribution
