It's just stopped working! (1.9.18p8, IRIX 5.3)

see a line like this (stolen from another logfile) :-

I've ramped the debug level up as far as 5, and apart from telling me
that it's un_becoming and then becoming the correct user it's got
nothing of use.
The permissions on the actual files are fine, as I can 'more' them (as
the correct user) whilst interactively logged in.
