How can I find nonstandard or control characters in a large file?
I have a humongous csv file containing census data, far too big to read into
RAM. I have been trying to extract individual columns from this file using
the colbycol package. This works for certain subsets of the columns, but not
for others. I have not yet been able to precisely identify the problem
columns, as there are 731 columns and running colbycol on the file on my old
slow machine takes

AIC and BIC in mixed effects model
Dear R Users:
I am trying to compare several structures of the within-patient covariance
such as unstructured, Autoregressive, and spatial by using the MIXED effects
model. Can AIC, BIC be negative ? If yes, then in what situations they may
be negative.
Thanks a lot.

Sound Forge 5 and wine-20020605
I recently removed the wine provided with RH 7.3 i386 (following the
codeweavers directions for completely removing the old wine) and
installed wine-20020605 from the source, without any noticeable problems.
Sound Forge 5 worked perfectly under wine-2002037 , but I'm not able to
get the open dialog box to work in wine-20020605. Loading native DLL's

A question on seasonal time series - R package
Hi there,
I am using the "ts" class of the "R" package. I have a data file
containing a time series of 1152 entries. It is actually 4 days data
cascaded together where the time interval of data collected is 5 minutes.
Thus, I have 288 values per day.
When I am trying to fit this data using a period of 288 with a
seasonal model, using the
arima(...) function, I am

DOS commandline decoder for Ogg beta4?
Help--
I've been experimenting with the encoder, using lots of different types of
music, and I'm floored by great sound quality of the ogg format.
Here's my problem---
I prefer not to use the Windows graphical environment for encoding or decoding,
regardless of how good the program (like dbPowerAMP), but I can't find a DOS
commandline decoder for converting Ogg files back to

FLAC / EAC Help
Hello!
I'm new here, so forgive in advance any ignorance if you will.
I have two issues...
One involved using flacattack.exe, and the other involves burning from cuesheets.
Issue #1:
---------
Any time I rip from EAC into flacattack.exe, and the disc being ripped includes various artists, flacattack.exe crashes on the second track.
The error I get (from the DOS window that flacattack runs
