It's sort of weird, because only we can hear the static most of the time. The remote party can not hear it. I tried setting the IDE drives to UDMA3, with no success. Hello, I've got a (P)ATA disk in a special frame. The disk itself supports UDMA-100 (and has an 80-ribbon cable), but the frame isn't compatible with that. By default, FreeBSD negotiates UDMA-100, and the console starts to fill with ICRC errors. In the past, I used a patch to ata-all.c that enabled the following entry in loader.conf to force the disk to UDMA-33, so it worked fine:

I also experienced this problem and the first thing that really helped out was changing the timing in the span line of the zaptel.conf. When I copy a file(13Megs) from /home/ to /tmp/, sync takes almost 2 minutes. When I copy the same file to /usr/local/, sync returns almost right away.
