I have some data that is dwarfed by one large cluster. I came across a paper titled "A New Partitioning Around Medoids Algorithm" (van der Laan, Pollard & Bryan, 2002) http://www.bepress.com/ucbbiostat/paper105/ that describes PAMSIL and PAMMEDSIL that look as though they might be more appropriate for the data I have.
