Xen Newbie on a Lenovo U160
I want to buy a Lenovo U160 laptop, Core-i7, 16gb DDR3, 500gb HD What I am trying to accomplish is to use a Hypervisor that boots up and then have a Windows, Linus and OS X VM that also gets started up and I can interact between them while still on the same laptop. I have a fair number of reasons for wanting this between so...

PCI-X/PCIe RAID controller.
Afternoon, I've got an old Dell PERC 4DC (PCI 64bit/33MHz) sitting in my home rig and with a new board on the way that has PCI-X (133) and PCIe (x4) slots, I was wondering what people would recommend for a cheap hardware parallel SCSI RAID controller (no fake raid please) that is relatively cheap but faster then the old PERC? I'm looking for something cheap that'll do RAID-10 but

That's a common farce! In fact, it's the whole reason why SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) is coming about. SAS can even use SATA drives. I don't think that's is a good comparison at all. You're changing too many variables. Especially when you're co...

Adaptec 39320A woes
I'm having speed problems with the SCSI card we're using to do tape backup. It seems to be functioning in 16 bit mode and the current thinking is that perhaps it's using a legacy driver instead of the correct one. The Adaptec site has a 'driver' for RHEL5 which I've downloaded and tried to install but it seems to have a problem installing on a CentOS-5 system. [root at

Software RAID setup ideas and an apology.
...about how to do this, but am not sure of the ideal way of doing it. It has to be a pretty common thing to do, so I'll ask it here. I have a server (Dell PE 1600SC) with two SCSI host adapters: a U320 LSI/MPT for internal drives only, and an Adaptec 39160 with two internal and two external U160 channels. I have set up a software RAID config with LVM2 on top (CentOS 4) with four 36GB 15K RPM Ultra 3 drives. The internal drives are set up with /dev/sda and /dev/sdb partitioned with 100MB /boot (for sda) and 100MB /boot2 (backup on sdb), and the rest of each drive as mirrors on a RAID1...

Ext3 problems possibly plauging me
Hello. My box has been running flawlessly for months now, but in the last 2 days hasn't stayed up for more than 5 minutes. All this seemed to have started after I did a very very bad thing...... I ran the EXT2 to EXT3 conversion on my root filesystem. I used the "tune2fs -j /dev/sda1" to do the deed. After it completed the machine ran fine (the machine was up and serving when I

performance problem ???
Hi, I got a similar problem with my test configuration. I am using share drives from my AMD Athlon XP 1600+ / 512 DDR RAM running with NT4 workstation and my linux server is a Slackware 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18 and Samba 2.2.4 running on a Pentium 166 MMX / 128 RAM / U160 40Gb SCSI disk. My problem is a bit different. I get well a lot of performance but my connections often break. So I can well listen to music ( mp3 files on a share drive ) and at the same time loading big *.PDF files ( 15 Mb ) but it doesn't work for a long time. After a few minutes, connectio...

ext3 performance with hardware RAID5
I'm setting up a new fileserver. It has two RAID controllers, a PERC 3/DI providing mirrored system disks and a PERC 3/DC providing a 1TB RAID5 volume consisting of eight 144GB U160 drives. This will serve NFS, Samba and sftp clients for about 200 users. The logical drive was created with the following settings: RAID = 5 stripe size = 32kb write policy = wrback read policy = adaptive cache policy = CachedIO #stripes = 8 I intend to revisit the effects of stri...

ATA DMA issues - are there problems lurking in 7.1?
...e the drive's capability when the BIOS only provides UDMA33? Anyway, until I can resolve this I'll be forced to /attempt/ to pool a bunch of SCSI drives into a single (software) RAID0. Will geom(8) and gmirror(8) do this for me? The drives are not all identical (size/manufacturer), but are U160's. But I was hoping to create one large drive out of them. Doable? Pointers/advice/etc GREATLY appreciated. Thank you for all your time and consideration. --Chris

samba performance issue
Hi, I recently installed a new samba server to replace an older Novell machine. Now, we are having performance issues. I have installed many samba servers, and have not run into this problem before. Some background info: The server is an Athlon 1800+ w/ 512MB DDR RAM. We are using software raid on 80GB IDE ATA 100 drives with the VIA 82C3XX chipset. When mirroring the drives, we usually get

Lots of overhead with ZFS - what am I doing wrong?
I was trying to simply test bandwidth that Solaris/ZFS (Nevada b63) can deliver from a drive, and doing this: dd if=(raw disk) of=/dev/null gives me around 80MB/s, while dd if=(file on ZFS) of=/dev/null gives me only 35MB/s!?. I am getting basically the same result whether it is single zfs drive, mirror or a stripe (I am testing with two Seagate 7200.10 320G drives hanging off the same interface

Samba -> WinXP: slow transfers, partial solution
Hello All, I'm running Samba 3.0.24 as PDC and file server on Gentoo Linux, AMD64, 2.6.19 kernel, 100MBit/s network, and experience quite slow file transfers from Samba to WinXP SP2 clients: the speed is varying, but is about 1-2Mb/s at best. I spent quite some time investigating the issue, here are the intermediate results: 1) This happens only when transferring _from_ _Samba_ to
