PHP SmartyPants Typographer 1.0b2
As I stated before, I had in the work a utility to control spaces
around punctuation and at some other places. Now, I've integrated it,
with a few extra quote goodies, within PHP SmartyPants, as an
extension just like PHP Markdown Extra extends PHP Markdown.
And so appeared SmartyPants Typographer (announcement on my weblog)

mtext uses the typographical descender to align text
<>
Hello
One sometimes (quite often really ) marvel at the choice of defaults in
R's graphic engine.
For some obscure reason, mtext uses the typographical descender (bottom
of letters) to align text. That is: "gG" will end up slightly higher
that "GG". Depending on the font, "Q" might end up higher than "O".
(for explanation of baseline & descender see:

difficulty with R expressions in text/legend
hi, i'm trying to prepend some plain (i.e. unevalutated) text to a
typographically evaluated R expression in a legend(...) call.
here's a working legend(...) call that is close to what i'd like
(where x and y are returned from an lm(...) call):
legend("topleft", legend = c(bquote(R^2 == .(summary(x)$r.squared)),
bquote(R^2 == .(summary(y)$r.squared))), fil...

Split String in regex while Keeping Delimiter
...ocyten +" "gramnegatieve staven +++"
# "grampositieve staven ++"
#
# [[2]]
# [1] "leucocyten -" "grampositieve coccen +"

Best regards,
Ivan
P.S. It looks like your e-mail client has transformed every quote
character into typographically-correct Unicode quotes ?? and every
minus into an en dash, which makes it slightly harder to work with your
code, since typographically correct Unicode quotes are not R string
delimiters. Is it really ? that you'd like to split upon, or is it -?

RedCloth and lang specific hooks
Hi,
I use textilize() which is a great way of letting end users edit contents.
But the code in RedCloth is quite compact, and doesn''t allow for easily
adding correct typographic behaviour depending on the lang of the text.
For instance, correct quoting uses round double quotes in english and
double carons ? ? in french; the spaces before punctuation can be
corrected too. I''d like to know if there is an effort somewhere to clean
up a bit the RedCloth code, and add...

need settings for the listings package
Hi,
I am typesetting R code in TeX using the listings package. I have
experimented with various settings for the text, but all look a bit
ugly. This might be because I have no typographic experience ;-)
I would really appreciate if people sent me the settings they use for
the listings package (eg in the \usepackage line, or \lstset, I am
thinking about choices for basicstyle, ... etc). I could experiment
with lost of different settings, but I guess that some people who use
listing...

Firefox3 for CentOS4 -- dependency on evolution28 packages?
...ackages in
order to install the firefox package. Why? I removed evolution from
my system for a reason, and I'd just as soon it stays gone.
[*] Additional off-topic rant: Why was the API access to form history
removed from Firefox? Why must I throw away my entire history to get
rid of a few typographical errors to reduce the number of bogus field
completion choices I'm offered?

Maps, Eastern Europe
Dear all,
I would like to employ a European map in a presentation. My idea was to
use:
library(mapdata)
map("worldHires", c("Austria", "Switzerland", "Germany"))
where I include all countries from my analysis as a vector of character
strings like in the example above. Unfortunately, I was unable to
specify the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) or

metapost device in R (again ;-)
...solely in R (ie
without writing C code)? I realize that it will be much slower, but
first I would like to see how it works before writing in C. What
source files should I be looking at?
You may ask why I should bother about using Metapost. Well, I'd like
my TeX documents to be more consistent typographically, and MP has
quite a lot of useful features (such as the possibility to include its
eps output in LaTeX directly, EVEN when generating PDF files with
latexpdf). But the biggest bonus would clearly be the ability to
typeset math formulas nicely. (I realize that this would require one
to start a M...

Split String in regex while Keeping Delimiter
Hello List,
?
I have a dataset consisting of strings that I want to split while saving the delimiter.
?
Some example data:
?leucocyten + gramnegatieve staven +++ grampositieve staven ++?
?leucocyten ? grampositieve coccen +?
?
I want to split the strings such that I get the following result:
c(?leucocyten +?, ??gramnegatieve staven +++?, ??grampositieve staven ++?)
c(?leucocyten ??, ?grampositieve

Variance Components in R
Hi,
I'm trying to fit a model using variance components in R, but if very
new on it, so I'm asking for your help.
I have imported the SPSS database onto R, but I don't know how to
convert the commands... the SPSS commands I'm trying to convert are:

Does mock_model''s :null_object option work?
Please understand in the following that I am making relatively minor changes to legacy (non-TDD/BDD) code in Substruct and don''t have the time to refactor nicely right now. I''m just trying to get past the untested/un-speced cruft quickly to write the spec for my new code, so I''m looking for expediency over prettiness.
I''m specifying

R-beta: Suggestion for a very minor change to Rd.sty
Dear R gurus and users,
for some functions in some of the many packages available for R, with
the current definition of \Header given in Rd.sty, the heading bumps
into the surrounding words in documentation printed via LaTeX. To
alleviate this minor typographical mishap, I'd like to suggest the
change to R/doc/manual/Rd.sty included below as a context diff. With
this minor diff applied, the heading proper is included in a minipage
environment of appropriate size, which results in line breaks
introduced in the heading instead of bumping into the surrou...

Re: R-0.64.0 for Win9X/WinNT
...ever use this,

For me, it's a cool feature: I use the standard help file when I know what
I want to do, but I don't remember that !?$รน* option I need.
But, to learn the details of a new (for me) command I prefer the visually
pleasant and typographically elegant (yes, I print sometimes...) pdf files
produced by pdflatex with this new feature (and so I can appreciate the
hard work of the R team in the developpement of the R help file format...)

nameless functions in R

I have an apply statement that looks like:

Is it possible to make the function check.cols() inline to the apply
statement. Some thing like this:

Split-plot model
How do I set up my model equation in aov to analyze a split-plot design?
I have two factors (CO2 and NITROGEN), each with two levels (high and
ambient). CO2 is my whole-plot factor with three replicates for each level
(i.e., 6 rooms total).
Is this syntax below correct?
summary(aov(response ~ ROOM + CO2*NITROGEN + Error(ROOM/CO2)))
