1.8.4 and write-through cache
...pain. We have 30 oss''s of multiple vintages. The basic difference between them is * md on first 20 nodes * 3ware 9650SE ML12 on last 10 nodes After the upgrade to 1.8.4 we were seeing terrible throughput on the nodes with 3ware cards (and only the nodes with 3ware cards). This was typified by see the block device being 100% utilised (iostat), doing about 100r/s and 400kb/s and all the ost_io threads in D state (no writes). They would be in this state for 10mins and then suddenly awake and start pushing data again. 1-2 mins later, they would lock up again. The oss''s were d...

Nroff -> .Rd -> R-ex; html
I am using R 1.2.3 on Linux Mandrake 7.2. I have a ton of S Nroff help files that end with source code typified by the following: Last S statement in an example, e.g. X <- y ..KW models ..KW regression ..WR When using R RMD Sd2Rd to create the .Rd file I get X <- y \keyword{models} \keyword{regression} } The } matches a { in \examples{ at the beginning of the example code (started in Nroff by .EX)....

Function hints
...even in the limited form provided by my implementation, and I have already discovered a few useful functions that I was unaware of. While developing and testing this function, I ran into a few problems which, I think, represent underlying problems with the current documentation system. These are typified by the results of running hints on a object produced by glm (having class c("glm", "lm")). I have outlined (very tersely) some possible solutions. Please note that while these solutions are largely technological, the problem is at heart sociological: writing documentation is n...

Another request for gss-keyex inclusion
I would like to request additional consideration for inclusion of the gss-keyex patch (https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1242) into mainline OpenSSH. I know this comes up every few months, and I know that the current answer is "no" (as stated in November 2007), so I'll get straight to the new information and possibly-new arguments. 1. I conducted a careful, line-by-line

Linux update knobbles Samba
...s not do anything; this would bring up information under Mandriva 2007. So I cannot access LinuxServer from the Konqueror browser running on LinuxServer. Do I need to suppress the password request that I get with smbclient? How do I do that? * Other Things ** log.nmbd is showing a set of errors typified by the those below. These appear to be coming from nmbd every ten minutes, rather than directly from anything that I do. I established this by tailing log.nmbd. Ignorant lack of bliss : summarise table by column attribute
Having read the list posting guidelines I fear my first post is about to break the rules. Apologies in advance. We have been asked to produce some graphs of relative performance of 3 groups of people in relation to the trend of their previous performance. I am neither a mathematician or a statistician, but wondered if R (which I have been using as a desktop calculator!) and some knowledge from

Calculate area under a curve
Hi, I want to know the area under a curve, which is not given as a function, but as values in a time series. It is not a smooth curve, but switches often between positive values and zero (the values describe the moisture in the soil over a year, one entry is one day). I already tried area.between.curves, but got only 0 as result. I guess, it doesn't work because of these multiple changes

Intermittent stalling in file transfers / server connections
..., printing (CUPS) and Apache+PHP+MySQL for webapp testing. I'm trying to track down an issue with my Samba server. Basically, I can be happily transferring files to/from it for a couple of hours, then suddenly (and seemingly randomly), the transfer will stall for about 30 seconds. This is typified by Winamp's audio output stopping for 30 seconds, then restarting from where it left off (or sometimes 30 seconds further on). Usually the apps that are running on the XP box will continue running, but Explorer won't allow access to Start->Run or start any more apps until after the 30...
