GSM back door to shell with Centos and Palm handhelds
...s motorolla has an usb interface to the host, it's quite
simple to attach the phone to the host running CentOs, i dont like very
much usb 'things' but things are like this... anyway, if you do so
you'll notice in syslog:
<...>
Aug 8 20:54:13 spoolbox kernel: cdc_acm 1-2:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM
device
<...>
Don't know other mobile phones with an usb interface but it could be
similar in others with an operational modem (i have to admit that im not
an expert in GSM neither telephony...)
Anyway, if you inspect the usb line, you can see:

Problem connecting a USB modem.
Hi
I'm trying to connect a USB CDMA modem (z010) to a CentOS 4.1
(kernel 2.6.9-11.EL) and I can't talk to the modem. I tried the
same modem under Fedora Core 1 (2.4.22-1.2199.nptl) and it works
like a charm.
The only difference is /dev/ttyACM0 for CentOS and /dev/input/ttyACM0
for the Fedora.
Any help would be appreciated.
Tank's.

Adding an MT9234ZBA-USB modem to CentOS6.3
How, exactly, does CentOS-6.3 with udev recognize an USB modem when it
is plugged in. How is it indicated? What other configuration is
required?
I can find the modem in /sys/class/tty and I can get the attributes
using udevadm but I do not see anything in ps that refers to the modem
device.

MultiTech MT5634ZBA usb modems
...I am still in the testing phase
of using this system for production, and during my tests I have detected
a problem I have not been able to solve except for unplugging the modem
from the usb port and plugging it back into the usb port.
In the middle of a fax production of around 1,000 faxes the ttyACM0
device becomes disabled and disappears. I have only had this happen
twice so I have not collected sufficient data to figure out what is
happening. When I remotely reboot the os, the system comes up and
ignores the modem that has become faulty, and of course ttyACM0 is
assigned to a different mode...

Hi. LG PC Sync can work with ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1 but fails to enumerate com ports. I cannot select port other than COM1 and the combo box that would allow me to do that is blank.
I did:
# ln -s /dev/ttyACM0 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com5
# sudo chmod g+rw,o+rw /dev/ttyACM0
and added to registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM]

USB modem on centos
I am playing with a USR (us robotics) USB modem model 5637.
in the past I used internal modems and had no issues.
One this unit I plugged it in, dmesg says its recogized.
I did "ln -s /dev/ttyACM0 /dev/ttyS4" this works.
I then did "cu -l /dev/ttyS4" type "AT" and I get OK... looking good.
When I "ATDT my number" I get a connection at 1200 baud (which I should)
and funny characters... I thought looks like a parity thing.
I then did "cu -e -l /dev/ttyS...

which despite having a USB cable it apparently communicates using the serial

The relevant output of 'lsusb' is:

The device is registered as /dev/ttyACM0 and uses the kernel module 'cdc_acm'
(USB Abstract Control Model driver).
I've tried most of the listed APC compatible drivers [2] and they all failed.
I'm using NUT version 2.7.1. For instance, using 'usbhid-ups':

For the HCL, should we list this as a serial UPS, or is it USB that is auto-detected by the Linux kernel as a USB-to-serial converter?
If it is the latter, what are the USB VendorID and ProductID? You can send the output of "lsusb -v" if you prefer. (This will help others with non-Linux...
