i have done further testing, and even at constant bitrates, wma is far
superior, from an "overall listening experience" point of view.
it seems that:
speex maintains the crispness/treble of the recording, but with the
cost of computer-ish background noise, like turning into russian
radio stations on the am band, if you get my drift. ess sounds are
particularily fragile to this.
wma removes all high-freq/treble of the voice, and makes it "round"

Channel stuck with call pri flag
Hi,
I have a problem where some PRI channels get stuck in a "Call" mode. If I do
a zap show channel XX, it shows as "PRI Flags: Call". However there is no calls
on that channel. Trying to force a hangup does not work:
[root@neil1 Dialer]# asterisk -r -x "soft hangup zap/27-1"
-- Remote UNIX connection
zap/27-1 is not a known channel
Any ideas?

Hi all !
I tested vorbis. I sounds good, but when I play
something in mono, trebles are much stronger. Perhaps
is stereo phase of hi bands removed to improve
compression ? I't a good idea (it's not audible in
most music), but it should also provide an option to
preserve them.
Is there docs that explains how dows vorbis compress sound ?

Getting masked FFT data out of libvorbisenc
...lly, I'm looking in mapping0.c, dumping out the debugging information
that's already there. One of the most promising places seemed to be just
before floor1_fit, but it seems a bit odd:
http://home.samfundet.no/~sesse/vorbis_floor3.png
In particular, there's a _lot_ of energy in the treble, where I'd expect
there to be almost none. I don't know very much about the internals of Vorbis
(nor psychoacoustics in general, I'm afraid), but it seems to be as if the
floor is a rough copy of the FFT _plus_ the tone masking stuff, whereas I'd
probably want it to be a rough copy...

ogg: another tag?
I've learned that I can make a tag with vorbisgain that tells the player
at what volume a track is to be played to achieve a certain level of
loudness.
Is it possible that there will be a tag that tells the player for instance
to add more bass when it plays a track? Ore more treble?
With such tags it would be possible to customize the sound of a
track according to my wishes - without changing the track itself.
Is that possible? Does such a thing exist already?
Thanks!
Tom.

de-essing into speex?
...der quality 9 means you start to hear
"computerish" ess sounds.
as for the speex VS windows media encoder issue, compare speex quality
2 with the wma file. they are equally sized and should therefore be of
equal quality, but in my ears the wma file is quite a lot better. it
may have less treble, but the spx file sounds very synthetic.
note: if i have used speexenc incorrectly please let me know.
the wav file was 2MB so i didn't want to include that, but simply use
lameenc etc to decode the mp3 file into wav if you want to do testing.
i hope to hear from you soon. i find this issue...

c't listening test: Ogg problem at 128kbps
...equency response problems, AAC had
background noise, and WMA lacked impulse response. So I don't think I
should be concerned about my hearing...
At 128kbps, however, most of the frequency response problems were gone
-- except this time, I picked Ogg as the worst, based on an overly
exacerbated treble. Others were still noisy and lacked impulse detail,
but Ogg/Vorbis was the one I decided first was definitely not close to
the original. Listening to it again, I can confirm the difference I
heard, although maybe I wouldn't put it in last place this time.
The passage I based the Ogg/Vorbis 128...

Losing definition on the midrange on latest encoders
...oder, but newer versions should be able to achieve that
quality with a lower bitrate."
I would disagree with this. I think the developers have made some poor
choices of late and the latest encoders are worse than earlier ones.
Basically they allocate much more of bandwidth to the very high treble than
they used to which shortchanges the midrange - even at the highest bitrates
they never allocate very much bandwidth to the midrange. Yes the highs are a
little crisper, but I don't think it was worth losing definition in the
midrange where our hearing is more accute.
Unfortunately it...

IE6 Text Selection Problem
Hi Guys,
I have a problem with IE6. Using any version of prototype and any
version of scriptaculous IE loses the ability to select text by dragging
the text cursor over it. You can double/treble click text, or use shift
and the arrow keys but you cannot use the mouse. This applies to text in
both input and fixed elements. Has anyone else got this, or knows how to
fix it?
Cheers

AACPlus Shoutcast v1.90
...Anyway, I've set up a mono AAC+ stream at 32kb/s for. It's strange that
Winamp reports it as stereo but the selection in the the shoutcast DSP
is mono.
Vorbis q -2 http://soulfm.stationplaylist.com/listen.m3u
AAC+ 32kb/s http://stream.gottabelieve.org:9000/soulfm.aac.m3u
I think the treble is much more natural with AAC.
Happy comparisons.
Ross.

...ch was the
original wav when blind-testing. The original had some distortion that
perhaps does somehting with my cheapo soundcard) but here's a description
of what i've found:
When doing some sample encoding with rc2 (rebuilt rpm with latest redhat
7.1 gcc errata) I got some extremely loud treble distortion sounds in the
left channel (only). Please listen to the samples at low level to avoid
hurting your ears. My guess is that the bug is related to the channel
coupling mode used in 128bit and 80bit mode because that's the only modes
that exposes this behaviour.

lowpass option (Was: RE: channel coupling in rc2)
I would very much like a lowpass option because for FM radio broadcasting I
don't want to encode frequencies above 15khz. I'm waiting for this option
before switching to ogg from mp3(lame).

OK, one thing at a time, so will you please leave wma out of that for
now?

Live stream equalizer
...s inferior.
All other input plugins do not have their own EQ code so they utilize the
PCM EQ. A common complaint until v3.0 and v2.90 was that Ogg Vorbis files
sounded flat and lifeless compared to MP3 in Winamp when using the EQ. This
was quite obvious on my LPFM station which had a fairly high treble boost
and a mixture of MP3 and OGG.
When v2.90 was released, Nullsoft switched the MPEG plugin to default to the
new PCM EQ. Now all files are equalized the same.

Ross Levis.

Problems printing, fonts are cut off
...are that is
giving me problems is Finale 97, a music notation program. Finale
installs Truetype (.ttf) fonts for the special music notation
characters. The display on the screen is fine. When I print, the
characters are clipped off at the top. For instance, at the beginning
of each measure is a treble clef sign, which looks sort of like a
cursive letter G. The top loop is allways cut off. It also appears
that text is clipped, such as the titles at the top of the page. This
happens not only when I use the physical printer, but also if I print
it to a PDF file.
If I had to guess, I'd say t...

OT: USB T1/E1 Interface?
Just curious: has anyone seen or heard about a USB-based T1/E1 interface
device? I've seen some serious T1/E1 testing equipment that is
USB-based, but I was wondering if there was something more generic, like
a Zaptel-ish T1/E1 that used USB instead of PCI/PCIx.
Thanks!

PRI problem, pri_fixup_principle: Call specified, but not found?
Hi,
in a PRI setup, the receiving side is changing the B channel at
proceeding. It seems this sometimes breaks some logic
(pri_fixup_principle) and then the hangup kind of breaks, release is not
answered and a restart cycle is triggered (by remote side).
Anyone can help me debug this ? I've seen many posts with simmilar
issues but no answer/solution.

Font / charset encoding problem?
...works fairly well, and would probably deserve a 4 on the app database.
Except for the fonts, which kind of defies the purpose of a typesetting
software! Here are the symptoms and some log activities :
* No musical symbols are displayed (except the ones commonly found in
default charsets, e.g. treble/bass clefs, sharps...)
* Sibelius' standard font for notation is Opus (ttf), which registry
is 'microsoft-symbol'. I have installed Opus.ttf along with other
Sibelius-related fonts so that X can see them, and they are perfectly
displayed by xfd / xlsfonts / xfontsel

RC3 vs. 1.0
Just a (I hope) quick question:
Are there any advantages (related to sound quality and file size, not to
encode/decode speed or segfaults) of using 1.0 instead of RC3?
I as it because I'm a Debian user, and I track the stable branch, which
means I'm stuck with the vorbis tools version RC3, unless I want to use
unofficial apt sources (don't like it that much), or compile my own
