Bug in Acrobat Reader 7 (or R?) with translucent text
My setup: R 2.4.0, Windows 2000, Acrobat Reader 7.
When I create a .pdf with translucent colors, the translucency works
correctly for points, but not for text. Below is some R code that
creates a .pdf with this phenomenon.
I was going to report this as a bug in R, but then I tried to view the
pdf with a couple of other viewers and found that at least one of the
viewers correctly disp...

Guild wars 2 and other translucent windows
How's wine support coming with translucent windows?
Guild wars 2 has a new launcher that makes extensive use of transparency to mimic the in-game interface, but of course, it turns into a massive black square here.
Screenshot of the launcher, all that is black is supposed to be transparent:

FW: Maps and plotting
Thanks for the help on the translucent dots. What would be the best
method for creating a map of the facility? I looked into map* in the
libraries and didn't find anything on creating the maps, just using
them.
Thanks again...

metacity theme opacity
I pushed out some changes to gwd that makes it possible to properly set
an overall opacity value for any metacity theme. Making the complete
decorations translucent can look bad with some themes. However, I've
made it possible to have the opacity fade from opaque to the selected
opacity value in a similar way to how the built-in decorations look.
This usually looks a lot better.
I'll add a schema file for gwd sometime soon but you'll have to manua...

state of blur plugin
...d I reckon that it will be error prune so I'm considering
not to try and add it myself. If someone else likes to give it a shot,
I'll gladly look at any patches and include them if it proves to work
well.
Some additional options have been added to the decorators which allow
you to make any translucent decorations blur what's behind them.
Applications can also use the hint recognized by the blur plugin to
specify blurred regions.
I've added two small utility programs to git.compiz.org:
git.compiz.org/blurset
and
git.compiz.org/blurdemo
blurset, is similar to transset except that it all...

Hmmm, sounds like a window manager/environment issue, unless you're
having a video card issue (see below). What is your desktop environment?

Umm, what Windows version offers translucent settings comparable to Linux
desktops? None that I know of. And by "opaque," do you mean translucent/
"see through" is turned on, but set to 0%? If so, that's still transcluent.
No shipping Windows or Linux distribution I know of uses video card

transparency?
dear R wizards:
I am getting to play more and more with fun fonts (irony warning). I
now know that I can safely use my TeXtext encoding with the postscript
device, but not with the pdf device. Unfortunately, I believe that the
postscript device does not support translucent colors---or is there a
version parameter (like the version="1.4" that I need with the pdf
device) that would permit the use of translucent colors?
Right now, it seems that my choice either TeX encoding or translucence?
[there turns out to be another reason why I prefer the pdf to th...

export 4D data as povray density files
Dear list,
I wish to visualise some 4D data as a kind of colour / translucent
cloud in 3D. I haven't seen such plots in R (but perhaps I missed a
feature of rgl). The easiest option I found would be to export the
data in povray's df3 (density file) format and visualise it with
povray.
The format specification baffles me a little,

Aurorae for Compiz
...res still some work, but I
think I first need some directons from you.
The issue I currently see is mostly related to the kwin specific padding
(shadows) and translucency. I based the code on KWD and went for the
reparenting approach, removing the pixmap related code. Now the background is
not translucent and all the hacks I know of, do not render it correctly. I see
that KWD is using KWin's PaintRedirector, so do I need to do the same or do
you have any other ideas how to get translucency working correctly for
reparenting decorations?
The next issue is that the padding becomes part of the d...

compiz 0.3.6 in fedora rawhide
...ECT, not if you request an indirect context. So
this is a problem we need to fix in libGL, but for now I'm keeping
these patches in the compiz RPM.
fedora-logo.patch
Branding patch, not upstreamable.
composite-cube-logo.patch
I wrote this patch to allow the fedora logo (which is mostly
translucent) to blend correctly on top of the cube. I forget the
details, but without it the blue background (that the branding patch
sets) of the cube turns all black. One of these days I'll look into
it and try to come up with something upstreamable.
So we're in pretty good shape here, looking for...

[R300] high Xorg process CPU usage

git-bisecting compiz pointed me to this being related to the translucent
cube feature, and I discovered that
the /apps/compiz/plugins/cube/screen0/options/inactive_opacity gconf key
was set to 90. Changing it to 100 restores sanity for me. Not sure how
it came to be less than 100 in the first place, but if it can happen by
default that should probably be fixed.

window walking interface
...hanges to screen.c and
paint.c.
We still have to do something about the clip planes, right? I guess a
wrap-able setOutputClipPlanes function will do for now. I'll make this
change next unless you've got a better idea.
It should be fairly easy to properly integrate any 3D window elevation,
translucent cube and sticky window mode now that plugins can hook into
the cube plugins structures. Just add whatever hooks you need to the
cube plugin.

When activated, the "dialog" floats in fixed position at the center of the

preventing the user from clicking any links or buttons.

Changing the appearance of the login box
...ubstantially lighter than GDM. Given that Swift Linux needs to fit on a CD without sacrificing LibreOffice, every MB counts.
What I miss from SLiM is the better-looking login box. The default login box of LightDM is ugly.
How do I change the appearance of the login box? I'd like to make it translucent, shrink the session box, and eliminate the icon and the computer name from the display.

New version of X11, png and jpeg
...features.
Pros:
Antialiasing of text and lines (can be turned off) but no blurring of
fills.
Buffering of the X11 display and fast repainting from a backing image.
(The intention is to emulate the timer-based buffering of the windows()
device in due course, but not for 2.7.0.)
Ability to use translucent colours, including backgrounds, and produce
partially transparent PNG files.
Scalable text, including to sizes like 4.5 pt. This allows more accurate
sizing on non-standard screen sizes (e.g. my home machine has a 90dpi
1650x1024 display whereas standard X11 fonts are set up for 75 or 100
dpi)....
