Audio format for announcements
Hi guys. First off, to the folks at Digium: outstanding work. The fact
that Asterisk is open source puts you right at the cusp of what will be
the most important telecom advance since the transatlantic cable.
Anyway... a couple newbie questions concerning sound quality - I don't
see any reason why the system should not use the best possible format
for any given connection.
1) Is it possible to store the menu sounds in wav/aiff, and let
asterisk compress them to gsm only as necessary? Eg...

few if any refereed academic papers are written for financial gain:
Lawrence Lessig said that congressional representatives rarely hear
counterarguments to the garbage they get from corporate lobbyists. The
Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP, and probably also the Transatlantic
Trade and Investment Partnership) will strengthen the rights of
corporations in this area. If you think that will limit the progress of
science and the useful arts, as I do, I suggest you contact your elected
representatives and tell them so -- if you are a citizen of a country

RODBC package: how to check whether connection is open
What is the recommended way of checking whether an RODBC connection is open?
Since odbcValidChannel is not exported from namespace RODBC, I suppose I
shouldn't be using it.
This is the best I could come up with, but it seems a bit 'dirty' to be
using a tryCatch for something like this:
odbcOpenp <- function(conn)
tryCatch({odbcGetInfo(conn);TRUE},error=function(...)FALSE)

Newbie: Backup internet connection
...k which is
a 2 meg leased line, we then have a 2 meg adsl line for backup from a
different ISP
What i want is live failover for outgoing traffic, not only for complete
link failures but also when then main isp has routing issues to a given
ip range (e.g during the recent disruption to 2 of the transatlantic links)
The solution should require little or no involvement from either isp,
and if possible ''sensible routing''. What i mean by this is if we are
making a connection to a ip that is on our backup ip''s network it used
that line rather than the main line
I have had a q...

Digium and mailing lists
I was somewhat concerned reading Mark's posting earlier today.
Obviously, things are very bad in the US at the moment. Their
Government even deported Cat Stevens the other day (check
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3686992.stm ).
Clearly, given the fact that Digium contributes so much to Asterisk,
they shouldn't be forced to risk their company's future by hosting these
