Totalnet
...version (5.2) does not support Win98 and the upgrade cost is very high. In looking at Samba as an alternative, I have two questions: 1. Does Samba fully support Win98? 2. Our users move easily between PCs, X-terminals and workstations, depending on their application. A significant feature of TotalNET is you can use the normal Unix login facilities from a PC, saving the horrendous task of having to have two entire login user-name/password systems. Can Samba use the Unix login system? Thanks Ron ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ron Kreymborg...

How to specify username in mapping path?
...ng a different username.... of course if they try to map to their home directory, samba will use the current username, which doesn't match, and therefore, password invalid. How can I specify username in the mapping? \\server\homedir <then somehow a username> I know there's a way in Totalnet by Syntax... (BTW- I know they can change their windows logon, but they need to be logged into a netware server also, using a different name) TIA!!! some cannot join domain
...an account, sambaSamAccount object. This process has succeeded in some four machines I have tried, but other machines fail this final conversion. I get an error "The user name could not be found" at the machine. All of these machines were joined to the same domain previously run by Totalnet Advanced Server, so the machines themselves are configured to be capable of joining. The only pattern I can discern is that the machines on which this occurs have names of 8 characters or more, though a machine that did join the domain has a name of 8 characters, so I am not sure that this is...

File locking issues? Has it been a problem for you?
...the right place, point me in the right direction. I've got a Sun that I want to use for file services for our desktops (Mac, W95). I was planning on using netatalk and samba until I thought about the lack of file locking b/n the two. So, I started looking at other options (like Syntax's Totalnet), but it's quite a bit of money just for file locking :) My question is - for those of you who run both samba and netatalk have you had problems with files getting corrupted due to lack of file locking? If I get enough requests I'll summarize the results. Thanks! -philip -- Philip Hall...

Memory allocation gone awry with OpenSSH 3.(3,4)p1

allocate_print_jobid: failed to allocate a print job for queue lbrmgt
We have recently migrated from a package called Totalnet to Samba to replace our file and print services. File services are working great. >From time to time we get a call that printing stops working. I have found a post stating that it may be a file space issue. After checking, our file systems have plenty of extra space in them and have never fi...

WG: Windows vista ultimate samba 3.0.31
I found the solution: I tried the srvmgr tool from microsoft to get connected to my samba 3 domain (from an XP client). And this tool told me the same "There is no PDC found for your domain. You may go on but but your rights may be Restricted." As I logged on I saw that both my PDC and BDC where BDCs. I stopped my BDC. Logged on to my PDC and remembering that I had also smbd4wins

3.4p1: 'buffer_append_space: alloc 10506240 not supported'
I have been trying to install 3.4p1 on a number of machines. Servers on ia64 Linux, i386 Linux and SPARC Solaris are all working like charms. On the other hand, I am having trouble at least with HPUX 11, DEC OSF 5.1 and Unixware: on all those systems, sshd bails out after authentication with an error in buffer_append_space. Here is the output of sshd -d on the UnixWare machine (uname -a:

Samba authentication
...Samba receives the password encrypted, it has no choice but to use a local smbpasswd (and can't use /etc/passwd, NDS, NIS, pam etc...). Right ? My understanding is that with the current version of Win NT, you cannot disable password encryption. Right ? Do you know what are the alternatives (totalnet Syntax ? others ?) ? Joining XP clients to a Samba PDC
Greetings, I've been pulling my hair out on this problem for several days and I'm not really any closer to a solution. I hope someone out there can help me. I'm trying to set up a samba PDC on a Fedora Core 2 box using an LDAP backend (on another server). The base install of everything is working fine. At the unix level LDAP connectivity is configured and working properly for
