Mixing RAID levels in a pool
Hi, I had a plan to set up a zfs pool with different raid levels but I ran into an issue based on some testing I''ve done in a VM. I have 3x 750 GB hard drives and 2x 320 GB hard drives available, and I want to set up a RAIDZ for the 750 GB and mirror for the 320 GB and add it all to the same pool. I tested detaching a drive and it seems to seriously mess up the entire pool and I

Re: [brandz-discuss] Re: BrandZ, Xen and Chime for Solaris 10 U3 ?
Xen will not be in update 4. We are pushing towards integrating into Nevada sometime this summer. We''re actively working on getting another release out to OpenSolaris. I have my latest attempt at building an ISO image spinning in another window right now. This new release will be based on Nevada build 66. It''s been a ridiculously long time since our last release, and I

LZO compression?
Hi, I don''t know if this has been discussed before, but have you thought about adding LZO compression to ZFS? One zfs-fuse user has provided a patch which implements LZO compression, and he claims better compression ratios *and* better speed than lzjb. The miniLZO library is licensed under the GPL, but the author specifically says that other licenses are available by request. Has this

Metaslab allocation control?
I was wondering if it''s planned to give some control over the metaslab allocation into the hands of the user. What I have in mind is an attribute on a ZFS filesystem that acts as modifier to the allocator. Scenarios for this would be directly controlling performance characteristics, e.g. having system and application files being allocated on the inner side of the platter while pushing

Xen 4.0 VGA passthrough?
Hi, in light of upcoming personal hardware upgrades, I''m eyeing at this to ditch my real Windows installation for good (needed for occasional gaming). Will there be any considerations be done towards this in future development, to make this work on an OpenSolaris dom0? Regards, -mg -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Debugging WINE?
Hi, I'm trying to get EVE Online working under WINE in Solaris. Reading various forums, it works fine with the last few versions in _Linux_, however in Solaris it does not. The game consists out of two executables. The first is a simple splashscreen application that then starts the actual game executable. The splashscreen app seems to work fine, the splashscreen shows and WINE exits with

ZVOL access permissions?
How can I set up a ZVOL that''s accessible by non-root users, too? The intent is to use sparse ZVOLs as raw disks in virtualization (reducing overhead compared to file-based virtual volumes). Thanks, -mg This message posted from opensolaris.org

Issue with adding existing EFI disks to a zpool
I spend yesterday all day evading my data of one of the Windows disks, so that I can add it to the pool. Using mount-ntfs, it''s a pain due to its slowness. But once I finished, I thought "Cool, let''s do it". So I added the disk using the zero slice notation (c0d0s0), as suggested for performance reasons. I checked the pool status and noticed however that the pool size

Multiple filesystem costs? Directory sizes?
While setting up my new system, I''m wondering whether I should go with plain directories or use ZFS filesystems for specific stuff. About the cost of ZFS filesystems, I read on some Sun blog in the past about something like 64k kernel memory (or whatever) per active filesystem. What are however the additional costs? The reason I''m considering multiple filesystems is for instance

Resilver hanging?
How can I diagnose why a resilver appears to be hanging at a certain percentage, seemingly doing nothing for quite a while, even though the HDD LED is lit up permanently (no apparent head seeking)? The drives in the pool are WD Raid Editions, thus have TLER and should time out on errors in just seconds. ZFS nor the syslog however were reporting any IO errors, so it weren''t the disks.

Permanently removing vdevs from a pool
Is it possible to gracefully and permanently remove a vdev from a pool without data loss? The type of pool in question here is a simple pool without redundancies (i.e. JBOD). The documentation mentions for instance offlining, but without going into the end results of doing that. The thing I''m looking for is an option to evacuate, for the lack of a better word, the data from a specific
